How to Save Money at Durham Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I can not say enough good things about everyone at Durham Animal Hospital. I took my pet guinea pig in after he stopped eating or leaving his house. Despite being a pet that many people think of as disposable, they treated him with such kindness and caring. They really worked hard to try and help him in any way they could and you could feel the care and compassion from every single member of the staff. I would not hesitate to strongly recommend Durham Animal Hospital to anyone. They are amazing folks!

Dr. Miller and his staff are all friendly, fun and caring, they just seem to love what they do! They do their absolute best to make our puppy feel comfortable every time we come in. As for the service, I never feel like I'm waiting around for too long and I'm never shocked by the bill, so that's a positive for me. I'm glad the rescue that I adopted my pup from recommended Dr. Miller and look forward to having him as our family vet.

I never have to worry about my dog's care when we visit Durham Animal Hospital. I walk in and I'm greeted with the sweetest of smiles as if I am a family friend. Dr. Miller is very thorough to make sure all problems are addressed and will take the time to sit down and talk me through all the steps I need to ensure my dog is properly cared for. My dog gets so excited when we visit instead of getting anxious, which is rare when we go out. They're the best! 2 years later... My dog passed away of old age recently. I just wanted to say thank you for taking care of Brutus and me over these last couple years. Brutus loved visiting you guys and you guys made me feel like I was a part of your family. Don't worry, my patronage here has not ended. When I decide my heart is ready, I know exactly where to bring my pet. Thank you for your kindness.

Durham Animal Hospital, and Dr. Miller specifically, are great! I've been taking my two dogs there for a few years now and have always been happy. Staff is always very friendly and helpful. Recently, one of my dogs had surgery on both hips the same day (she had hip dysplasia). Dr. Miller and the staff made me feel very comfortable about the whole thing and were great to my pup. They were cost-conscious, so I don't feel I overpaid for the surgery and subsequent treatment/checkups. And my girl is doing great post-surgery!

My little dog got into a bar of chocolate and I rushed her to the Durham Animal Hospital. It was my first visit and I was extremely worried about the state she was in. Dr. Miller did a thorough check on her and was able to stabilize her until I could get her to the emergency room. He stayed late to make sure she was okay. The staff was very supportive and did everything they could to ease the stress of the situation. I would recommend them if you need someone who really cares about taking care of your pet like you would!
