How to Save Money at Whole Pet Veterinary Hospital - Davidson
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My little girl and I had our first visit with Whole Pet this morning and it was amazing. The staff are phenomenal, so helpful and the whole process for my kitty was so easy, she was so relaxed and curious about everything. I don’t think she’ll have a problem going back to this vet and our new client checkup only took about a half hour. Definitely found our vet! Update: had a new addition to the family and brought him down last week, same as his new sister. Very curious of the new surroundings, totally unfazed, and even got him playing with some of the new kitty wall furnishings. Can’t recommend whole pet enough!

The commutation from the clinic leaves some concerns. I have received several notifications of test results for other people’s pets, including one detailing medications that needed to be picked up, and for different tests than the ones that were run. I understand people make mistakes, but every communication in the last two weeks contained mistakes. In trying to sort out which test results were actually my pet’s, I asked to talk to the vet. When I called back after work, to make sure that the vet had been told I wanted to talk to them, I was instead given the client services manager. She told me that she and the practice manager decided to switch our next appointment to a free second exam, instead, and my vet had left for the day. I canceled that appointment because switching from a 5 minute appointment to a 30 minute physical exam did not work with my schedule. The next morning I received an email firing me as a client because they claimed I accused them of falsifying medical records—I did say I couldn’t see some records in the patient portal, but I thought by sending me those records, they fixed whatever error was causing it to not show up. I was mostly focused on trying to talk to my vet instead of communicating through a third person, which is grounds for confusion. This is the first time I haven’t talked directly to a vet about the lab results, so I assumed that was normal practice. I’m very sad to leave the best care my cat has received. Whole Pet is great about letting her snuggle against them for the entire exam, and when they do have to take her out of the room, she doesn’t seem extra stressed about it. I’d also been telling my previous vets for six years that her hips hurt her, but Whole Pet is the first one that suggested taking X-rays when they didn’t find any issues with the standard physical check—turns out it was her stifles, not her hips, and the Solensia treatment has been amazing.

I have had many pets in my life, moved around a lot, and have visited many vet clinics in multiple states. Whole Pet is BY FAR the best...ever. Why? Well, the level of expertise is unmatched. They can adjust treatment protocols specifically tailored to your pet, using either standard Western medicine protocols or incorporating Eastern medicine applications...or BOTH! Truly, no other clinic offers this type of holistic approach and options. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the entire clinic makes me feel that my dogs are the single most important dogs in the history of the world! Both Dr. Sheehan and Dr. Uehlein are exceptional, and the entire staff expresses a kind, caring and enjoyable energy. You can't help but KNOW that they really do care about you and your beloved pet. The staff always goes above and beyond! There is clearly a kind culture that permeates through the entire clinic! Absolutely, 100% recommend!
