How to Save Money at North Mecklenburg Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough good things. I’ve taken my cat here twice for her yearly checkups. I was referred by a friend who’s been taking her animals here for years. I’ve been seen by multiple providers, and each time they have treated my cat Luna with the utmost care and compassion. Luna is extremely anxious and shy around strangers, and they couldn’t have been more patient with her. The vet’s assistant even gave her chin rubs to sooth her when she was getting her vaccines. Little things like that don’t go unnoticed by us pet parents. They cared for her like their own. The facility is clean, and they are thorough without suggesting unnecessary costly treatment. I am moving soon but I will still make the drive here because it’s the best place for Luna.

North Meck Animal Hospital is the GOLD STANDARD for veterinary care. We transferred here after a terrible experience with our vet of three years and it couldn't have been a better decision. So far I have seen 4 of the doctors that practice there and one has been better than the next. They are compassionate and sincere when it comes to the treatment of your pets and don't try to nickel and dime you for medicine or treatments you don't need. They are truly angels all the way from the front desk staff to the nurses and to the doctors. I am so appreciative of their kindness and professionalism and will continue to sing their praises for years to come!

Everyone we've encountered there has been kind, patient, and attentive. We moved from out of state and our dogs both got stress colitis from the trip across the country. They jumped into action and got them feeling better quickly. Two years later, our older dog started rapidly going downhill around 4am. They had us in the hospital as soon as we were able to get there the next morning and did all they could. Unfortunately, it was simply her time, as treatment would have involved uncomfortable, in-hospital hospice care for the same ending. They were compassionate, considerate, and gentle, and helped us give our girl the very best last hours as we said goodbye. We eventually got another dog, an Aussie-Dachshund, and continue to trust them with her and our now-older Dachshund-Chihuahua.

NMAH is absolutely superb when it comes to caring for your pet’s wellness and routine visits. When you have a complex medical problem, they either figure it out or find the perfect specialist hand-picked just for you. We brought a complex issue that was extremely serious to Dr. Katie Blackard - she discussed it with her colleagues and promptly got back with us suggesting the options we had. She did not have to take the time to do that, but she did. Why? Because, like all of the doctors at NMAH, Dr. Blackard cares about our precious pet, and she cares about us. She has so many patients, but when she’s seeing our pets, she’s thorough and never rushed. I had the pleasure of taking one of our dogs to Dr. James at NMAH last week to discuss a surgery. Again, the dedication and care was palpable. He made sure I completely understood the surgical procedure and commitment to the rehabilitation process to ensure the best outcome for our “doggie.” I loved that he referred to dogs as “doggies.” I instantly loved him. I could go on and on about the exceptional facility, cleanliness, dedication to excellent outcomes, kind staff, and overall love for animals, but this post would become a novel, so I won’t. Thank you, NMAH, for being there when we need you most ❤️. Martie Wallace
