How to Save Money at Riverwood Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Just moved back here to Clayton and I have a pup who is very allergy prone. Every time I have called Riverwood they help immediately even if it’s just to let me come pick up some more meds quick. They are ready within an hour of me calling. I appreciate everyone there and so does Aldo!

Just moved to the area a week ago and had no idea where to go for an emergency. Called multiple places…. But Riverwood seemed like the best fit for us. The ladies I dealt with got us in immediately and took care of my furbaby. Everyone was so nice and attentive to my baby. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 💕

I have been bringing my senior cat to Riverwood Vet for the past 5 years. This practice is amazing. Dr. Kristin has wonderful bedside manner, and she and all the staff have been so kind to us, especially in helping treat my cat with his various health issues. When he had difficulty taking his antibiotics, they even offered for me to bring him into the office each day so they could administer the pills for me. They always go above and beyond to make sure my cat has the best care. I feel like my cat is in the best hands at Riverwood Vet!

This vet clinic was recommended by a fellow coworker. I used it 2 times over a 2 year period, my old girl a 15year black lab mix was approaching end of life.... I will keep it short and say this team are very caring of dogs. For sure I got to stay with my dog a full year after her stroke. For this I am forever grateful. God Bless Dr. Kaitlyn and the great team at Riverwood.

It has taken me some time to write something regarding my experience with Riverwood Veterinary Clinic I recently lost my puppy to Parvo. With all our recent new responsibilities (taking care of my inlaws whose health has deteriorated and a volatile job situation), I missed an appointment for the final set of shots he needed. This was the shot that could have saved my little guy. I thought I would get around to it, I thought I had more time...but isn't that always the case? We think we have time... until we don't. I went through all the stages of denial when he was sick. Maybe it was something he ate, maybe someone poisoned him.The night before taking him in I thought he turned a corner. He was back to his playful self, playing with his toys and finally licking some water from my hand after not drinking water for so long. Then it got bad , really bad and I called Riverwood Vet for an emergency visit. From the very first phone call they were warm , patient and comforting. I didn't know he had Parvo but I had a strong feeling judging by his terrible symptoms. What happened next is something I still struggle with. Everything that followed felt surreal, as if everything moved around me in fast forward while I moved in slow motion. I was saying goodbye and I didn't want to. Every step of the way the staff was incredible ..displaying a level of empathy and humanity rarely seen or experienced today. I wasn't ready for what happened that day. I don't know the names of who helped me through this event , I am going to say everyone in that office was empathetic to me that day. They felt my pain and shared that pain with me. They let me hold my boy as he was put to sleep, his pain gone, mine remaining. They gave me privacy to say goodbye. I stood there apologizing for failing him , half expecting him to just jump up and jump on me like he would always do. He was at peace, resting now. Days later I received a letter from the office . I thought it was just an invoice or receipt , I was not ready for what I opened. A card with my boys Paw print and condolences from the entire staff. I was floored with emotion in the middle of the mail room. I am extremely thankful for the level of humanity and sympathy from this office. This very triggering and depressing event was made easier by their caring actions and I am so....so thankful. I still hurt every time I pass by food lion. But I am reminded that despite how bad loss can feel this world has good in it that can help. Thank you so much
