How to Save Money at China Grove Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been going to China Grove animal hospital for over 17 years. Dr Vaughan has helped me when it was time to say goodbye to my 1st cat. He's helped with wellness visits and small ailments over the years for our now 17 year old Yorkie. Years ago he helped save one of my cats after I mistakenly used the humane society to spay and it didn't go well. (I admit I was trying to save money and I learned there are some things you just don't want to skimp on, your family's health is not one.) He was able to tell me what was wrong with that same cat last summer when another office I had used in emergency over the weekend had made a wrong diagnosis. He's cost conscious when helping come up with a plan if there's a problem. He's very knowledgeable, and he takes the time to answer questions to make sure you understand what's going on with your loved one's health. They've always treated me very well there, are respectful and appreciative of my business. I feel like I can trust them in a time of need. And I appreciate that. He doesn't have a big fancy lobby, but if you're cost conscious this could be considered a good thing. I've always been happy with and recommend China Grove Animal Hospital.

I called to inquire about the cost to have my boxer (who was just seen in their office 2 months prior) neutered. I explained the reason I wanted to have him neutered was because his 2nd ball had not dropped yet. The lady that works the front desk advised that since it was only 1 ball it would be a different procedure and would need to call me back on that cost. She advised via voicemail that the cost would be $298.00. I called back and agreed to cost to schedule his appointment. She advised on what to expect - drop off time, pick up time and payment handling. On day of the scheduled surgery my father was dropping off my pup. He states there is an issue with the cost and I need to give the vet a call. The other front desk lady brings to my attention that the cost is now double due to the extent of the surgery. I explained to her my conversation with the other employee and she already made me aware of the cost. She proceeded to tell me that she could not speak on what the other employee advised other than they were not aware. I explained the VM but she said that did not matter & could not speak on that. Frustrated, I agreed to the amount and said to proceed with the surgery. Minutes later the lady calls me back demanding payment up front due to the type of surgery. She also states please do not kill the messenger but the vet is requiring the full amount to be paid before he proceeds with the surgery. I explained how unprofessional this entire process is and how no other vet I’ve used in the past requires payment up front & what if something happens to my animal & I felt that they were now only requiring payment up front because I stated my frustrations but would never withhold payment due to this, I just wanted to make them aware. She proceed with you can pay now or not drop your animal off. My father stated that the entire time he was sitting there waiting to drop off my pup that the vet was very rude and vocal with his frustrations with me. Mind you I was never once disrespectful only stated that the process itself was unprofessional and misleading to your clients. I will never be using this vet again. My first interaction with this company was pleasant but I will say like the other reviews below the place is a mess. My recommendation is find a different vet to use if you’re in this area!

I was able to get my cat fixed and all shots for $116. I’m also taking a senior cat for a full visit with blood work and all her shots and it’s only $180. Very affordable

They take care of my fur babies like they're one of theirs. Took my cat that seemed sick; and he's in there getting extra cuddles and purring like crazy 😆 The staff is always super friendly though and very helpful with whatever the problem seems to be.
