How to Save Money at Whole Pet Veterinary Hospital - Mountain Island

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr.Khare has literally changed our dogs life for the best! We have a Frenchie, Moose, who has a spinal injury and struggles to walk correctly. When we first brought him in, we weren’t sure what would work and what wouldn’t, but now, several months later our pup is running around! He receives acupuncture and has been prescribed a few holistic medications. We seriously can’t thank the team and Dr. Khare enough for everything they done! If you are looking for a more holistic approach I recommend trying acupuncture and the team here is highly skilled and I’ve never felt uncomfortable with the procedure. See y’all in a few weeks 😊

The quality of care here is 10/10. Every staff member is supportive and attentive. Three of our cats and our pup are frequent flyers of this hospital and I always leave with a smile. The vets are knowledgeable, through, and truly listen to you as a pet owner. I highly recommend them.

Great experience! Things have changed over the years, and this vet is nailing it on all fronts. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, fresh clean and spacious facility. But I really noticed the little things, like our vet wasn't in scrubs, but "normal clothes" which seems small but maybe less intimidating? The cold stainless steel table was covered by a padded yoga mat and a soft bathroom mat. We were moved back to a room immediately, even though we were early, without ever pausing in the front waiting room, which was nice. Even in the room, there were two small upholstered chairs together as a couch, instead of a metal chair, which immediately put our new dog at ease because she is allowed on the furniture! Payment was even taken care of in the room. And they obviously earned their stars because of level of care, willingness to find solutions and explain their answers to my questions. Just seems like a really wonderful place, and I am glad I made the connection with a mere "vet near me" Google search!

I could not be more thankful for being introduced to the Whole Pet Veterinary team. I've had both a personal relationship from bringing my own pets to them and a working relationship in teaming up to help behavior cases together with the veterinarians and staff, which have both proven congenial. At the Mountain Island location, I've been amazed by the unmatchable compassion and tenacity from Dr. Laura Lathan. Veterinarians are wonderful and intelligent people, but there are some in this profession that simply rise above even that unique commonality, and she is one of those rare people. She's seen me at my worst and been a comforting presence when I had to say goodbye to my sweet senior pitizen that meant so very much to me. She's supported me through desperation trying to heal and help a rescued squirrel that I was insistent on giving her tiny life the best shot for survival without suffering. She saw my determination and my empathy and she matched it. She also genuinely celebrated the wins we had along the way. I'm thankful for her and thankful for the team at Whole Pet Veterinary Hospital for their next-level care.

From the moment I arrived with my fur baby I was provided expert care and smiles with assurances that Sasha would be in good hands. Vet Tech Brittany was superb in handling and care! Dr Laura made me feel as though we had been friends for years and treated my Sasha with professionalism, care and options I was comfortable with. Let’s just say that I’m thoroughly satisfied and Sasha seems to be on the mend. We have indeed found a new veterinarian.
