How to Save Money at Providence Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dog got stung by a wasp & this was the closest vet to us at the time. They cleared her, said she was fine, no meds or anything, just an evaluation & charged us almost $100. Unfortunately, she was actually having a SEVERE allergic reaction and we had to take her to her normal vet in Charlotte, where they gave her a shot of Benadryl & steroids. Luckily, we barely made it in time and they immediately took her back and worked on her. I am so FRUSTRATED and UPSET that my dog almost died due to Providence Animal Hospital's NEGLIGENCE! Reason #1792453 to only trust Uptown Veterinary Hospital in Charlotte.

Very happy with Providence Animal Hospital! My dwarf bunny had a severe injury, and they were able to see me the same day. Dr. Lail was amazing with her, and they were able to get her into surgery not long after. After her surgery, they explained all of her aftercare and covered every detail. Every single staff member I have interacted with has been fantastic!

Anyone who travels with their pets always worries about finding a good vet when needed on the road. Well if you’re ever in Charlotte, know that you are in good hands at Providence! We discovered a large mass hidden in our baby’s upper gum and sent a picture to our home vet who said we shouldn’t wait until we returned home to get it checked out. I called Providence and explained the situation and they fit us in the next day. It was determined she probably had a cancerous tumor but it would require an oral/dental specialist and Dr. Lail and her staff took the time to get us set up at a specialist the next day. The tumor was successfully removed and while we’re awaiting biopsy results, one thing we know is that without Providence’s help we would probably be facing a worse case scenario had Addy not been given the immediate care that’ll give her the best chance to beat this. Thanks to all at Providence who helped make our situation better than we could’ve expected.

We took our Satin Angora rabbit here because he was sneezing and had a runny nose. Dr. Lail and staff were very kind, gentle, and knowledgeable. Our rabbit was comfortable enough to explore the room and approach Dr. Lail as she was filling out details. They were also able to get us in quickly, which is why we went here instead of our usual exotic vet.

I made an appointment expecting to come in for just a few vaccines and pay maybe $150-200. Ended up with a total of $512. When I went into the room, I was asked if I wanted a heartworm test which I agreed because last time I got this done at my previous vet it was only a $25 charge, well little did I know this vet charges $60. Then a lady who I assume is the veterinarian comes in and starts looking at Winnie and cleans out her ear and walks out with the q tip then comes back and says she has a yeast affection, although I am glad they found it I wish there was more transparency that when they did that, I was being charged another $60. Then given a $30 medicine without even asking me if I could pay an extra $90 today. Then come to find out vaccines cost $60 each when I remember vaccines normally cost around $20-30 which is what my vet I went to in Asheville charges (just last year). I will take partial blame because I should asked for a cost breakdown but I figured it couldn’t be too much off from what my last vet charges but apparently it’s double. Thankfully the kind lady working up front took off the exam charge to help bring my total down but the reason for my bad review is because there definitely needs to be more transparency around what the vet is charging you and they need to ask permission before doing something they know is going to add another almost $100 to your bill. I won’t be coming back here unfortunately due to this. I’m a young girl in my 20s I can’t a afford a routine vet trip to cost over $500 when I know there is cheaper vets that cost half of that.
