How to Save Money at Long Animal Hospital and Emergency Center | Charlotte NC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We love Long! We have been taking our puppy here since we got him in August. All the vet technicians, receptionists and vets we have come in contact with are all very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and compassionate. We have not come in contact with a bad employee yet. They seem to be very well staffed too. The wait times never seem to be too long, and we can get an appointment quickly, and they also have walk in hours. I saw some reviews say they are too expensive. This is our first dog and the only vet we have been too, but they don't seem too expensive, and they don't try to oversell us on anything

I am so disappointed with Long Animal Hospital!!!!! We spoke to the staff there about boarding our dogs, Bentley and Mia months in advance. We called yesterday, Oct. 25th to take them on Wednesday, Nov. 1st. We were told YESTERDAY, not months again that they needed their flu shot, so we wanted to bring them in to have the shots given to them and we were told that it had to be done a month ahead of time. No one, no one ever told us this until YESTERDAY. We had to scramble, hours on the phone calling other places to put our dogs up so that we can make it to a very important engagement we had planned for months now in Florida. Long Animal Hospital needs to train their staff better...... I will not go through this again, I will no longer take my fur babies there for any reason. THANK YOU TO "ANIMAL MEDICAL HOSPITAL AND 24 URGENT CARE" on Monroe Road, for helping us in boarding our fur babies. They will have our services from now on.

This is the only vet/animal hospital I will go to because they are amazing!! After 8 years and thousands and thousands of dollars, I took a chance on this place and immediately they figured out what was wrong with my dog. I had been to 3 other vets and this was the only place to achieve real results. My dog had a thyroid disorder and they treated him so wonderfully. They got him on a medication and he dropped 30 pounds right away, grew an undercoat that feels like silk, his skin issues went away, and he is the happiest he’s been since he was a puppy!! He’s 8 and he acts like he’s 2!! They gave him quality of life and that’s something I would have given anything for. I finally got my dog back. And he can live a full and happy life now. My only regret is that I didn’t come here sooner. They also treat my other dog and my cat with the same love and care. All of the vets on staff are wonderful, but Dr. Gibson is our favorite. He treats my pets like he would his own and I can’t thank him enough!!!

I was not going to do this as I have used this animal hospital for over 20 years. My recent experience here was way less than stellar. My dog went in for a mass removal two weeks ago and it was not performed and no apology was received for their screw up. They did a dental and some skin tag removals that were incidental. We returned today to have her mass removed and paid as much as our original quote after paying $500 last time for the dental and things. Also, when I arrived they had scheduled her for a dental again despite it already having been done. When picking her up the technician did not know that she did not have stitches to remove when giving discharge instructions. This place has gotten too big to give the personalized care that they used to give. I felt disregarded by my concerns and belittled for even questioning their mistake.
