How to Save Money at VCA Legion Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've never left a negative review of anyone, but this is VERY important for pet parents. I'm bicoastal, and VCA legion is (now was) my dog's NC vet, and has been his whole life. While out on the west coast, his home vet there said he needed to have his kidney levels checked as soon as I got home to NC. VCA legion refused to do so and made me go through almost two months of hoops before they would. They finally agreed to have his levels checked this Saturday. He died Monday morning in the VCA parking lot. Of kidney failure, which could have been prevented. I was in the parking lot desperately screaming and crying for help as he died in my arms at 7am, while the techs sat in their cars watching because technically they were just about to open. Two techs ignored me and walked into the building casually, but one was very compassionate and offered to check for a pulse. After he died. If you think of your pet as more than an animal, please save their life by going elsewhere. I will never, ever forgive myself for waiting for VCA and not going to another vet. It cost me my little guy's life.

This is a really great vet's office. The facilities are clean. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The vets and vet techs are very easy to talk to and provide great veterinary care. They are very kind and gentle with animals. When you need it, they give you good pamphlets and printouts of information. All of the office administration work is handled very smoothly and effectively. I appreciate that you can text with them to make appointments and ask questions. Overall, they do a really great job taking care of my animals.

Only ever had positive experiences here. Also love seeing a Fear Free vet in the area. Techs are so good with nervous and excited animals, and the vets are wonderful. I feel very confident that my dog is safe with VCA.

Absolutely amazing Dr’s & staff, I recently had a dental performed and all of the staff were fantastic, (they always are) they kept me up to date, clearly explaining throughout the hours long process what was happening & how my dog was doing. They are caring, compassionate and genuinely care about your pets & your pets health… and they did an absolute amazing job on her teeth!! :-) I would highly recommend VCA Legion Road to anyone looking for a great Vet! Thank you for taking such great care of Lucy!!

When we moved to the area, it was impossible to find a vet with an opening for our puppy. VCA Legion Road was the only practice that had an opening. As I did not have an option, I went with them. We could not have been more fortunate - I don't think we could have found a better group if we tried. The vet assistants and staff are wonderful. The vets themselves are incredible. Their collective love for animals, and care for their health, is evident. You'd be hard pressed to find a better office - if they have availability, stop by!
