How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We received great care for our 5 year old kitty Helene yesterday. She was vomiting all day and after bloodwork and x-rays it was determined that she had a severe allergic reaction to flea bites. She will be taking antibiotics and steroids for the next 10 days but she is already feeling better. Our veterinarian was Dr. Mosley and was very thorough and caring. The office staff and vet technicians were awesome. We will definitely bring both of our kitty's here again if needed in the future.

This organization was there for our family during an very difficult 24 hours and I can't thank them enough for making such a awful situation and decision as easy as possible. They were quick to address our immediate needs and very accommodating with special requests and thoughtfully and patiently answered all our questions. The people who work here are truly angels and I don't know how they manage to do such a difficult job with the poise and compassion they showed our family. You were able to help us when we felt desperate and trapped with such few options. And then you gave us the best experience we could have hoped for when had to make a decision to say goodbye to our Cooper before we had planned. We had scheduled an in-home appointment (for our goodbyes) that was to happen in a few days, but his decline happened very quickly and unfortunately the service we were planning to work with was unable to help in what became an emergency situation. It meant so much to us that the doctor and entire staff went out of their way to allow us to have the type of experience we were hoping for in the first place. The staff worked with us to perform the procedure outside in the sun under a tree. We understand that the clinic is very busy and the fact they took the time to make us feel like we were the only people there (which we certainly were not) was amazing and incredibly comforting.

We are so grateful for the excellent care our cat, Stevie, received today. The facility is very clean and every single person we interacted with, including the people when we came back this evening to pick our kitty up, were amazing. Thank you for making a stressful situation with a sick pet a little less scary. Your team took the time to really listen and understand Stevie's health background, which made us feel good about his care. .

They saved my dog's life last night!! My senior miniature pinscher was bitten by a big cottonmouth and I brought her into Veterinary Emergency Care as soon as I could. Chelsea at the front desk was very sweet to my dog and she let us wait in the car so that my dog wouldn't get scared. When it was our time to be seen, Chelsea came out to tell us we were ready. I really appreciated her care--it made this experience much less stressful. The staff were all very friendly and made me feel at ease. They took care of my dog, explained all of the procedures, let me ask questions, and reassured me when I needed to leave her for an overnight stay on IV fluids. I am really glad they were there for us when our primary vet was closed. The staff at Veterinary Emergency Care are life savers.

Great team at Veterinary ER. Our furbaby had allergic reaction to a shampoo and she had scratched her eyes causing inflammation on right eye. The doctor and nurses at the clinic took great care of her and treated her. I am very happy. Caring for our fur babies like our children!
