How to Save Money at VCA Whispering Pines Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I genuinely loved this clinic about a year and a half ago! The vet I saw initially for my puppy was phenomenal! So great that I recruited my sister to bring her animals to this clinic. The vet that truly cared and genuinely wanted to help my fur baby is no longer there. Probably because his main focus was caring for his patient and not how much money that pet could bring in. My close friend warned me that this clinic was all about the money, but that first vet made such a great impression that I decided to stay. The providers I’ve seen since have been okay, but nothing like the first. Maybe they are forced to follow corporate protocol so that clinic can make as much as possible. I signed up for care club which is a joke. We see them often for a skin allergy and always seem to pay at least $500 each visit, with care club! They cannot figure out what is causing it so we are going to NC State. He recently had a severe skin reaction and they wouldn’t see us, but they sure do love getting that automatic care club payment. The vet technicians and MOST of the front office staff are great! The lady working check in was not very helpful, when asked if we could speak with a vet for advice on how to care for our pets open wounds she got irritated and walked to the back mumbling vulgar language. I called Banfield Animal Hospital in Southern Pines and they did everything they could to help our fur baby, even though he isn’t a patient of record! We will definitely be transferring!

VCA IS THE BEST IN THE AREA HANDS DOWN! I wish I could give them 100 stars because they deserve nothing less! This place is a God send to animals and their owners and every single one of the staff here are very compassionate, kind and care about each pet that comes through the door. My pregnant (IN LABOR) Chihuahua was in labor for over 12 hours with only 1 puppy being born after 12 hours. Every vet in the Moore County area was wanting nothing less than $1500 to even touch my baby then I called Whispering pines veterinary and they told me to bring her in ASAP and they would be waiting on us. As soon as we walked in the door they had us in a room in less than 3 minutes literally and they started taking care of my baby and she was so comfortable there with the staff that she started birthing the puppies on her own. My baby delivered all her babies here that day up until the last puppy and that last puppy refused to come out on her own so Dr.Laster stayed 2 1/2 hours after closing (we walked out of there at 8:45pm) to give my baby a C-section to get the last (8th) baby out safely. And they didn't charge me not 1 penny more than the normal cost that they charge. They were so caring and kept me informed of everything that was going on every step of the way. We were there for 10+ hours and I didn't have to pay anything over $1900(and compared to other vet offices in Moore county that is 1/2 the cost of every where else LITERALLY 1/2 THE COST) every single one of the staff here have called to check on my momma and her babies every day since we left there. They care about you and your pet from the moment they meet you even after you leave their office. This veterinarian office doesn't care about money like these other greedy vets in the area. They care about the well being if your pet. My momma Chihuahua and her 7 babies (we did unfortunately loose 1 baby) are doing very well and they are all healthy and thriving. Today makes the puppies 3 1/2 days old and they are as healthy as can be. One of the staff even came back after she went home for the night to check on us and to come see the babies before we left there that night. If it weren't for Dr Laster and her staff I would have lost my baby girl and all her babies but the Lord had other plans and directed me to VCA where there are nothing but his Angels there to care for our fur babies. I love VCA and will forever be grateful for each of them for all the hard work they did to keep my momma and her babies alive and healthy. They could have easily turned me away at closing time 6pm Friday but they did not even mention that they were closing! They turned their lights off, locked their doors and began surgery right there on the spot to save my girl and her babies. IF YOU LIVE YOUR FURBABIES THEN THIS IS THE TO-GO VET OFFICE FOR EXCEPTIONAL CARE!! VCA I LOVE EACH OF YALL SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOU GIYS HAVE DONE FOR MY BABIES!! I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE STAFF HERE IN THIS OFFICE!

Rip off. I will never bring our dogs back there again. Although the front desk staff were professional and attentive, the business practices of this animal hospital are shady at best. Before they even examined our dog for the chief complaint of GI issues, they had developed a "treatment plan" that added up to over $1100 for just diagnostics. When I inquired as to why they needed things like multiple imaging types of his chest for GI issues I was given a generic answer that put into question how much we care about our dog. Super professional VCA. When I came back to pick him up they had added an additional ~$200 for healthier food and supplements that I had not requested. When I asked for a copy of the lab results I was told by the receptionist that they had to be emailed since the samples are sent to a third party lab. However, the veterinarian, Dr. Brady, assured me that they conduct those tests in house but could not explain why I couldn't get the results right then. Not sure how they diagnosed my dog if they did not have the lab results back at time of diagnosis. The lab tests that they assured me were crucial to accurately diagnosing our dog. I am not sure but it seems like they didn't need any of those tests and it is just an easy way for VCA to use the emotional attachment of pet owners to fleece more money out of their customers for diagnostics, supplements, and treatments that not every pet needs every time they come through the door.

Love the Staff and Drs. here. They treat my pups like family and answer all my questions clearly. Their patience is great for a worrier like myself. Not to mention great with dogs that forget how to behave upon entering the building
