How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Clinic of the High Country

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

In December we lost our sweet dog Max. The staff was so sweet and compassionate. So when my older dog suddenly grew a spindle cell sarcoma and needed it removed this is where I went. I know I made the right choice. My dog had amazing care and is home now recovering. Thank you to Dr Fitch and staff for being amazing and taking exceptional care of Ruby.

Everyone here is very knowledgeable and kind. Within 2 minutes of explaining to the receptionist what was wrong with my cat, she was able to identify the problem and get him the help he needed. The staff is very friendly and understands that hard decisions take time to make. They were very patient with me and allowed me all the time I needed. They’re also very honest with the treatment your pet needs. My cat had to stay over night and I felt at peace knowing they would take great care of him. I could not recommend this place enough!

Thankful we have this place in Boone. Yes, it’s crazy expensive, but if it saves your pet’s life, then it’s worth it. Our dog had an Addisonian crisis last night, it came on so fast we rushed her there at 3:30 a.m. and they were able to push fluids and steroids to get her back to normal and back to us. It was a Saturday night so waiting for our vet was not an option as she would have died by Monday morning. Thanks to the staff there! Keep doing what you do!

Staff and doctor were extremely friendly and helpful. My 2 year old cat is back to great health with the help of this team. The price was not unreasonable. They even called back the next day to check on her.

I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am for the care and compassion shown to our sweet girl River and to us as well as we just experienced a very scary, life threatening illness of Bloat. We have had to make visits here in the past due to not being able to get fit into our regular vet for same day appointments (colitis (stress poops!), a torn nail, and a random case of kennel cough.) But nothing that was ever life or death. I say this because it’s easy to get frustrated with the unknown wait times, but it’s important to remember those that are critical will get the care needed more urgently. We’ve had to wait 3hrs before she could be seen once for another reason, but knowing they are trying to save another animals life is important for perspective. The staff were amazing with staying very calm and caring while I was was upset, crying and trying to process things while signing papers for surgery. They made sure to explain everything in as much detail that they could for me and my husband to know exactly what would happen. They even let me go back to see her before surgery just in case which i appreciated having that moment. Our girl stayed over night and we got updates while in their care. I’ll never hesitate to take our pets here in the chance of emergency or cannot get an appointment in time with our primary vet. Wish I could give every staff member who was there that day we came in a massive hug and thank you!
