How to Save Money at Sunvet Animal Wellness Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

A true Holistic experience for a pet you really care about. To me, holistic means, all encompassing, and taking the best of Western medicine and alternative medicine and combining the two. That's the type of care I feel like I got here, and a staff that took their time with me and my dog. You really get the impression that the doc, and their entire staff truly care about you and your pet here. No other vet I have been to feels like this one

I thought for a bit if I should write this review. I don't like leaving negative reviews, but after reading all of the reviews before my new patient appointment, I saw that not one person was talking about the highly questionable practice Dr. Laurel uses to make decisions. She is very nice, and so is her staff. They made us feel welcomed and the office was calm and clean. They were ready for us as soon as we arrived and there were no other dogs in the office. That's great! I very much consider myself an open minded person (after this, maybe I'm not so much), and I definitely am open to the spiritual realm, but how much of that should be implemented into veterinary medicine without first trying herbal and conventional methods? I had a lot of concerns about the fact that my dog developed a cancerous tumor. It had been removed, but I wanted a second opinion from a vet who can maybe figure out the root cause so he doesn't get another one. Dr. Laurel brought me no steps closer to figuring this out. We spent most of our appointment going through my dogs diet and supplement routine. After presenting each item to the DR on my list, she proceeded to talk to herself with her eyes closed while swinging around a silver pendulum. Yes, that is how she makes her decisions. Not with bloodwork, a deep hands on examination, or other testing - just the pendulum. And I mean this very literally. I couldn't help but wonder, who is she talking to? Or, what is she talking to? She swung around a pendulum and talked to herself in a loud whisper and that's how she came up with her answers as to what my dog should and should not eat. This went on for almost a half hour. As I previously stated, I try to be opened minded, but what the...? I thought we would talk more about preventative care, additional ways I could ease my dogs suffering for the problems I presented to her, and I definitely expected her to give a much more thorough hands on examination of my dog. She did a quick check of his heart and eyes/ears, and that was it. I was really shocked that she did not spend more time looking him over, communicating with him, and helping us. I was also massively concerned about my dogs weight loss since his tumor and expressed concerns about cachexia. She dismissed it to the fact that I wasn't feeding him enough, even though I'm already feeding him an extra cup worth of whole foods a day. She seemed unbothered by the weight loss, but my dog is clearly underweight and I told her how concerning it was considering his never ending appetite and testing negative for all worms/parasites in a recent appointment with a conventional vet. I don't mind adding a metaphysical aspect to my dogs healing, but that's all it was. We spent so much time swinging the pendulum that I didn't get to one other item on my lists of concerns, to which she suggested booking a new virtual appointment. Based on the reviews, wait time, and cost of the appointment, I was truly expecting care along the lines of Dr. Judy Morgan or Dr. Karen Becker. Instead what I got was a Dr. taken straight out of an episode of Portlandia. Which shouldn't have surprised me at all because Asheville is the Portland of the South.

Dr. Laurel and staff have been most kind to my dogs over the years. She is a holistic veterinarian who has a very unique approach to medicine and treatment for our pups. We will miss seeing her, as we are moving out of state. I highly recommend to anyone who wants an alternative or to supplement conventional veterinary services. Her website details her services and modalities of treatment.

Living in this community I had heard about Dr. Laurel for many years from clients and friends alike before I finally saw her with my dogs. The stories about her abilities as an animal communicator and holistic veterinarian were amazing, and my actual experiences have been no disappointment! After careful, thorough and exhaustive histories and evaluations Laurel communicated with both my 3 year old french bulldog, and my 16 year old field spaniel. She shared their health concerns, general emotional tenor, specific joys and concerns. I was surprised when both of my dogs gave voice to their concerns for me and/or my partner, and our well-being based on their observations. Extraordinary how on point and accurate the dogs were with what they shared about us as well as their living situations. Dr. Laurel has been able to put my mind and heart at rest with concerns for my beloved furry friends' well-being, their emotional as well as physical health! This office is a place my animals love to visit, attended peacefully with a qualified, loving and caring staff! I am unable to fully articulate my appreciation for this intuitive healer and skilled veterinarian who attends to the health of my friends!

This used to be a very good vet but she has gone severely downhill in the last 5 years. We experienced repeated instances involving severe misdiagnosis, selling products at double the price of other sources, rudeness of staff, and the most important--very poor, rough treatment of our pets who became extremely agitated and hard to work with while there. Our pets were later treated by a more highly skilled veterinarian who knew how to work with pets without upsetting them. They actually enjoyed their visit to their new vet who was knowledgeable and experienced with how to treat a pet without causing unneeded stress.
