How to Save Money at South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've lived in Asheville for 28 years and did not even know this place existed until I desperately needed help for my precious golden, Jyoti. SAVES is impeccable on every level. The Doctors, staff, support teams are incredibly caring and capable in their respective roles. I felt very supported, Jyoti had a team of 10 loving and caring for her. You don't want your pet to have to need just expert care, but when life throws you something hard, you want to have peace around who is helping you and how. It was a privilege (though devastating) to experience this emergency care facility on every level. Asheville is very blessed to be served by SAVES.

They took the best care of my lil Holiday. She had a major surgery and they were wonderful. Dr and staff kept me up to-date during her surgery and after. I'm am so grateful for them and the expertise they have, that allowed me to have more time with my pup. These are good people.

Great experience! Bought my 13 yo blue heeler in to have his left eye examined. Very friendly staff that took us back to an exam room within minutes of arrival. The tech was great with a wonderful attitude and you can tell she really enjoys what she does. The doctor took the time to answer all of my questions. She has experience with owning blind dogs. I have to admit I came in dreading what I was pretty sure was going to be the outcome, a blind dog. I left feeling comfortable knowing my dog was not in pain, is still an awesome guy and has a lot of good time left with me.

From my first frantic call to the last instructions as our pet was discharged, the staff offered professional caring support to both our pet and us. The receptionist took time to understand our emergency and called to check on us while we were enroute. She had everything ready for us when we arrived, and immediately asked to bring our pet to the treatment area so the staff could begin evaluating her. As each staff member approached us, they introduced themselves and addressed us by name and explained who and what was being done for our pet. The receptionist was so empathetic and hospitable while we were waiting. The treatment staff was quick to come offer updates and gather history about our pet. The doctor was very reassuring and took the time to explain her evaluation and course of treatment. Prior to our pet's discharge, we were able to finalize the bill. As our pet was being brought out, we were given a complete update on her condition, the treatment that was completed and signs to watch for as she was recovering. We were given names and directions for other emergency facilities in case of any changes during the overnight hours. I called the next morning to inform the receptionist our pet had recovered completely. She immediately stated our pet's name and told me how thankful she was that I called. She assured me she would pass along our sincere gratitude and reminded me they were there and available if we needed anything further. I was relaying the conversation with my husband, when I received a text with a picture of our pet. One of the staff members had gotten a picture while the doctor was holding our dachshund puppy Delilah. We are so very grateful to the entire staff and doctor for the excellent care and support we all received ❤️
