How to Save Money at MedVet Asheville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very kind and compassionate people. Had to bring my dog in early in the morning for an ongoing issue and was assisted quickly and with care. Sidney especially was very kind and warm and definitely helped alleviate the heavy anxiety I felt having to bring a senior dog in for emergency assistance with her upbeat demeanor and knowledge. Luckily she seems to be on the upswing already! Thank you for helping us and getting Sophie back on track to health.

We found our Our sweet fur baby (cat Stanley) almost unresponsive when we got home. We drove him to Medvet. The front desk person immediately called an emergency to someone in the back. The young lady came running out and grabbed him, and took him in the back. After a while and several tests, it was found, he had a viral infection. He needed to be put to sleep. The staff was amazing. We got to hold him and love him one last time. Held him as he fell asleep.... I'm heartbroken. He was only 10 months old. A beautiful baby.

Well, it’s the 4th of July and our German Shepherd decided the best way to celebrate was to eat a tennis ball. At midnight. We live about an hour and a half away from MedVet but this was the closest 24 hour animal hospital. They are also recommended by our regular vet at Junaluska Animal Hospital. All I can say is that everybody was fantastic. The vet tech took care of our big girl and the doctor who came and met with us was great! They were short staffed but they did a great job of working us in and we were ready to head home at 2:40am after being at the emergency room for a little over an hour. Everyone we dealt with was very compassionate and professional. For an emergency pet visit, this was as good as it gets. It’s nice to know they are here if we need emergency vet services.

We took our cat there on a weekend because our Animal Hospital of North Asheville was closed. We have 4 pets and love our Animal hospital. Our cat was not eating and was in the same position for 2 days… normally he’s a very energetic outdoor- indoor cat. They told us that they couldn’t find anything wrong with the cat. Spent $550 for blood work etc. Cat didn’t improve, took him to our Animal Hospital and right away they told us that he had abscess tooth! I would give them zero if I could. All this money for nothing. A rookie pet doctor would figure it out right away. Actually my partner give him soft food instead of dry and she told me that he probably had a bad tooth!

Initially I was hesitant to go here due to the fact that people seemed to leave either five stars or one star... Happily, I'm going to be one of the 5s! -Despite what others said, no one foisted unnecessary costs on me. When my cat's treatment was pushed back pretty late, they actually offered to keep him overnight without me needing to pay extra. -The staff was amazing, all of them. Kind, empathetic, radiating warmth. Either they're awesome people or they missed their lucrative callings as expert salesmen or actors. :) I'm leaving toward wonderful people. -My cat left feeling much better, and I was given some medicine and advice/opinions to share with my regular vet. Staff spent a long time talking to me about my cat's complicated health. I was not rushed around, though I'm sure that when this place is busy there is necessarily going to be more focus on being fast. - Prices were extremely reasonable for an emergency vet. I've been to the emergency vet in Flat Rock and also a few in Columbia, where I grew up, and the prices around here were far better than those in Columbia. Treatment was on level or better. There are always gonna be times that things go wrong at any vet if it's an emergency situation. I know I've only taken my cat here once but it's hard to believe bad outcomes here are due to not caring or not being good at jobs. Thanks so much for helping Apollo and his rotty infected arm! Sorry to say as soon as the opiates wore off he went back to trying to self mutilate past the cone, but his wound is not dangerous anymore and his next vet visit is soon. Thank you everyone at MedVet :)
