How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I usually have a good experience at Banfield but with my last visit it simply was not very good. I told 3 people I wanted to talk to the vet about my dogs scratching and I was never even put into a room to talk with the vet. The vet came out and talked to me in the middle of the checkout area and that was it. We said three words to one another. The lady was simply so into selling me the wellness plan that no one was paying attention to what my dog needed. They are really busy at that place but they should follow procedures. I think my dog was the last one for the day and they were just done and ready to go home.

This Banfield was very helpful. My dog goes to a different store while my mom & Daddy's cat go to this one. While the other store won't let me pick up meds for the cat there, the vet here will let me order the cats & dog's both. The cat was almost out of her necessary thyroid meds. Not only did this office order her meds from their pharmacy to be mailed to my house, 3 hours away from the store, BUT the also gave her 4 pills to hold her over until her order arrived.

We’ve gone to Banfield for years. Overall, I’ve been happy with the wellness plans and vet services. However, recently I have had a terrible time getting through to anyone! They never answer the phone. I have a new kitten, and was unsure when I needed to schedule the next vaccine appointments. I was able to call and leave a message on their complicated voicemail system, and get a return phone call stating they had scheduled the appointment. Unfortunately they didn’t consult me about the time or date, and it didn’t work with my schedule. I have since then been unable to leave a message, reach anyone by phone, or get a return phone call to change the time. I will have to go to the store in person to work it out. I understand they’re busy, I’ve never experienced a doctor’s or vet office that never answered the phone. It’s very frustrating!

I’ve been taking my dog here for 4 years and never had a bad experience until recently. A few weeks ago, they had me reschedule his appointment due to him being hyper (which they knew about and always had me stay with him during his appointments) so they had me pay for a prescription of Trazodone to give him the night prior to his appointment and 2 hours before his appointment on that day which is today 08/12/2023. After doing this, I came into Banfield on time at 10am this morning. The lady told me that I was late and I asked how is that while my dog’s appointment is at 10am. She told me that it was at 9:15am so I showed her a confirmation email that it has 10am but she said on her computer it says 9:15am. So she tried to reschedule yet again for the next day at 2pm and I wasn’t going through all of this again especially since I’m driving nearly 40 minutes to get there. I told her unless you’re giving me a free prescription of Trazodone (which I know she couldn’t) then no rescheduling. She said she couldn’t do that and still could reschedule I told her no and walked off before I lost it! I’ll find another Banfield, hopefully. I’ll never spend another cent at this one again!

No Stars if I could - DO NOT BUY A WELLNESS PLAN CONTRACT FROM THIS BUSINESS. Terrible service and they cannot deliver. Purchased a contract for my dog only to find nobody answers the phone, appointments are often several weeks to months out. If you have an emergency - forget it! Oh and every visit takes forever to check in and check out. This week I needed a simple prescription refill for my dog. Called all week - no answer! Called and called and called....nothing. Today I got through after calling 4 times and ordered the refill, it would be ready in 30 minutes - GREAT! Go to pick it up and pay using Care Credit (which I always do) - oh, the person with Care Credit credentials is on lunch can you come back in 30-45 minutes. 1 hour later I stand in line for 15 minutes, only 1 person at the desk and she's clearly working with someone that was going to take awhile. She finally helps me and tells me she doesn't have the Care Credit credentials either and the 2 individuals who do are on a cruise and the other is not working. I have now spend way way too much time on a simple prescription refill. Imagine if you will if you needed your pet to be seen - forget about it! My second issue is I get completely different guidance on my dog's ear allergies every single time I go and it's still not resolved after 6 months of useless visits and expenses. I repeat, I strongly suggest DO NOT BUY A CONTRACT FROM THIS BUSINESS.! Oh and my older dog died waiting for one of their 6+ week out appts. and he was on the Banfield contract for 10+ years. Thank you! They are understaffed, under trained and have no business selling contracts for pet care they cannot support.
