How to Save Money at Animal Emergency & Referral Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

All the nurses, techs and doctors were absolutely phenomenal! You can definitely notice that they all truly love and care for what they do and your babies! I had to bring my 3yr old chocolate lab for eating something she shouldn’t have at midnight on Monday. Even at that time Sarah was truly the light in a dark tunnel, her upbeat attitude honestly kept me from breaking down in tears! Dr. Ivy was amazing as well! He answered any and all questions we had and even answered the ones we couldn’t think of at that time! A few days passed, Nancy called me back in a timely manner with some questions I had and answered them! She was so patient!

This is a late review, but I can’t thank the staff here enough. My little guy is friendly but nervous when it comes to strangers. We are full time RVers, which means we can’t always get back to our “home” vet when things happen. DJ was so great with him. She clearly loves animals and she helped this guy feel calm in a high-stress situation. I can’t recommend this location — or DJ — enough. Thank you for making things a little bit easier for us! ❤️

We had an amazing experience here! My babies hate going to the Vet but it is so necessary! Thankfully, we found a gem when we found this place... everything, from the skilled Vets, to the amazing Techs, to the front office staff! I'd like to give a special note to DJ, who gave my sweethearts the extra love and attention that they needed to feel safe and stress free! She deserves a HUGE raise! Thank you AERC for keeping my babies safe and healthy!

The staff/personnel at AERC are phenomenal! Everyone at this location should be appreciated for all they do! DJ is just wonderful and anyone would be lucky to have their pets care in her hands. She, the vet, manager, and even receptionist are so thoughtful and caring. There aren’t enough good words to describe this facility and its employers. Thanks for all you do, and again, special shout out to DJ (you’re amazing)!

The night shift staff deserves zero stars. They are callous with a noticeable racist attitude. And yes there were two AA on staff but they fit right in. Staff act like they care about your pets, but in reality, they couldn't care less. There's no urgency, and they are very insensitive. I will never bring another animal here again. Dr. Whitney, or maybe her name was Wednesday (she didn't care enough for me to catch her full name), was extremely rude over the phone. When you’re black especially a woman, the others tend to try and treat individuals a certain way base off of looks. From the student staff at the front desk to the nurses and techs, they were all cruel. I read several terrible reviews about this place, but I had no choice but to experience it for myself. It was an awful experience, and these aren't even all the details. Had I known the place was run by MSU students, I would have gone elsewhere, and maybe my pup would still be alive. They only seem to cater to a certain group of people, and they definitely don't look like me. Also, it would be helpful if they enforced their grooming and hygiene policies for the staff because their appearance and smell were off-putting.
