How to Save Money at Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to take make cat Bebe here because she decided to eat a large pile of string. ( I know now to make sure to watch what is on the ground with this one) unfortunately she had to have surgery. But I'm so happy it was with this Er! Let me start out everyone here is so kind and so caring for the animals! Obviously prices for an Er is not cheap and Dr Farrell was very kind with us. It was hard to come by the money but I had some friends that helped me out. Anyways the night of, after her surgery, he called me and told me they had to go in through a 3rd location but only charged me for the 2 that I had Initially got charged for * I really appreciated that* and then he told me he was still concerned with her intestines and that he didn't want me to think everything was A okay when in reality it wasn't which I really appreciate him not sugar coating it for me! But not only was he an amazing vet his team is also amazing. Everyone that watched over her told me how much they loved her and they were completely fine with me calling every morning and every evening! My baby Bebe is doing amazing and it's only been 3 days post op. She is so alert and interacting with us and she seems so much happier! I just want to thank everyone that helped me and my bebe out!🤗 highly recommend this ER in an emergency!

Very clean clinic. Amazing woman at the front desk on the day I took my baby. Don’t remember her name, but it was 5/20 7pm. She was wonderful, and very, very good at her job. Between running back and forth answering phones and setting up/cleaning rooms, she was still there to answer questions, take payment, and give well wishes for my Penelope. The doctor was pleasant enough, although wasn’t very clear on diagnosis and how it happened. Overall- emergency services were professional and lifesaving. I would return.

My dog had a gash in her hind leg and its Memorial Day weekend. Mobile was too full so I drove her to this Emergency Vet. They were very helpful and patient because it was around 10 pm when I got there. It was a bit of a wait but considering there are very few 24 hour Emergency Veterinarians, it was a blessing for them to help me. I had to leave her so she can have surgery; they called me after she got done and how she was doing. I could tell they took care of my baby and they were informative about her after care treatment. They were understanding when I couldn't make it once she was awake because of the drive I had to take, which eased my anxiety in being judged for not picking her up sooner. Thank you to the staff that helped us :)

The vet and all of the staff are amazing! They explained everything throughly and gave us options. He wasn't able to perform one of the procedures because our cat expelled her bladder while in sedation. He informed us and then took that procedure off of the bill. We never would have known if he did the procedure or not, so him telling us and removing it from the bill shows it is a trust worthy establishment. Hopefully we don't have to ever go to the ER again, but if we have to we will go here 100% of the time. #EmbersFixed.

We brought our dog, Jester, in on a referral from our vet. Every person we encountered was so compassionate and kind! Before they did anything, they explained the entire process to us, and were very detailed with cost. They kept us updated regularly before, during, and after his surgery, to remove a rock. When we were able to go pick him up the next day, they said it hadn’t cost what they estimated it would, so they credited us back the remaining money. Thanks to them, and their quality of care and attention, we have our boy back home with us, recovering, and his sister is much happier! Thank y’all!
