How to Save Money at Lakewood Animal Health Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff at Lakewood Animal Health Center are amazing!! I just spoke with Angela who was most helpful in getting me notes for my dogs last visit there. She was super kind & assured me that she will send notes to the allergy/dermatologist vet we also take our dog to. I couldn't be more pleased with this clinic. They're very thorough as far as making sure all of your questions are answered. If you want a fantastic vet to take your fur babies to, this is the place!! Thanks ya'll!!

Last week I took my 3 year old pug mix to Lakewood Animal Health Center. He was due for vaccination and I was concerned because he had a reaction to his vaccines last year. Dr. Julie Dyer was wonderful. She gave my sweet pup the most thorough physical examination he has ever had. She was kind and really took her time with us. My pup received his rabies vaccine and is doing great. I appreciated Dr. Dyer’s professionalism and attention to detail. I can’t imagine ever going anywhere else. Thank you!

There are better places to take your pet for cheaper and higher quality care. I came to this vet after recently moving from Columbia, MO. My old vet apparently trained here years ago and told me to try them out. Long story short, everything was extremely expensive. Tests, labs, and even some vaccines were nearly double the price of other local vets. The tech/doctor made weird comments toward us and our pet that I believe were intended to make us feel like bad pet owners. We wanted our senior dog to be evaluated for possible future dental work. They claimed he needed at least 3 teeth pulled and that he was in stage 3 of dental disease. The quote they gave us was $1,000-1,400, which is double the amount that I was quoted from my old vet (and the new vet I recently visited after this). I know dental is expensive, but again, other vets in the area have quoted significantly lower prices than that. At the end of the appointment, the staff was set on sending us home with a year supply of heartworm medicine which was $100, but they marked it down to $85. We are not opposed to heartworm meds and since this appointment we have placed our dog on heartworm prevention. However, we expressed to them that we did not want to purchase it through them and would find a more affordable option for us. Still, they charged us for it and told my partner she had to take it with her for our dog. The staff made her feel like she did not have a choice to buy it or not. Immediately after, my partner went back and demanded a refund, since we had not asked for the medicine and had made it clear we didn't want to buy it. They issued the refund which I was grateful for. Before checkout, we were quoted about $350 for this visit by the tech. By the end of the appointment, we were charged about $650 and had to wait a few days before receiving the refund. It took a week to get a call about our dog's test/lab results which was fine, though I am used to getting vet results within a couple days. I asked the doctor to email me a copy of all my dog's test results. She seemed hesitant but eventually agreed to. However, she did not send copies of any notes or of the results for his fecal test or heartworm test. I called back multiple times asking for these results to be emailed to me. The first time I called they said they told me the results were negative, I said I knew that but wanted them emailed to me for my records. I was told she would email them ASAP. I waited 5 days and called again. The lady was hesitant and said the tech would email/text me. I got no results for hours and was then told the results weren't "ready", which at that point was a lie, since the doctor AND another staff person had already read them to me. Later that day, the tech called me to let me know the results were negative, again. I again asked for them to be emailed to me and they finally were about an hour after we got off the phone. This was frustrating, as it took 2 weeks to get ALL of the results to tests that I paid *a lot* of money for. I felt they were withholding the results from me intentionally, but it's very possible that at this point I was so frustrated that maybe I was acting a little paranoid about that. All in all, not a great experience and it probably cost us 100-250 more than it would have at a different vet. As mentioned before, we have found a new local vet that is a better fit for us and are pursuing future treatment with them. If you have the budget for higher priced care, this is probably fine for you and your pet. However, I will say that some of their practices and attitudes toward us felt very off. UPDATE- We got a second opinion. Our dog does not have any kind of dental disease and did not need a single tooth pulled. The total price for his work was $383. Strongly recommend avoiding Lakewood at all costs!

Absolutely the best veterinarians and staff!!! Everyone there is all about taking the best possible care of your pet! We have taken our dogs here for years and have seen all the veterinarians. Each one is knowledgeable and caring. Both our dogs have had simple check up visits, surgery, and everything in between and for every visit, no matter the situation, they take excellent care of us all. Dr. Eyler and the staff took our dachshund off the surgery table and to the shelter room with them when a tornado came close by and sirens were going off. Again, I highly recommend them and appreciate the veterinarians and all of the staff!!
