How to Save Money at Jewell Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give zero stars, I would. I wish I had read reviews before taking my dog in to see Dr. Smith. I have a 14 yr old beagle and when I went to have a consultation about the mass on her leg, I asked what would happen if we didn't move forward with the surgery? She made me feel like a terrible human for even asking. My dog had surgery on 8/15 and was only sent home with a cone because I asked for one. One 8/25, we had the stitches removed, everything seemed to be ok. Later that day, the wound reopened and when I called to express concern that afternoon they let me know it would likely be fine but there's nothing they could do about it since they were closing for the weekend. I had to take her to an ER vet who again put her under and restitched the wound and I had to pay the same fee again for another doctor to take care of her. Dr. Smith never called to check on her again. My dog has been on painkillers and antibiotics for three weeks and probably needs a couple more weeks until fully healed. I would recommend going anywhere but Jewel and Dr. Smith.

We had gotten a cat a while ago, who was having some dental issues. We brought him in and got an estimate to have his teeth removed. They were very upfront in stating they weren't sure how many teeth would need to be removed until they had him on the table and under sedation, because it's hard to really see everything in a cat's mouth. They got the removal scheduled just a week or two later, and everything went great. Their prices were reasonable, based on asking around to other people who'd had to have cats teeth pulled. They gave me a very clear, outlined bill for all costs and walked me through what to expect for recovery time frame. They also had a follow up appointment to check on the healing about a week and a half later. Every staff member I've dealt with has been super friendly, including the vet. Another thing I appreciate about them is they are good at being punctual. If you have an appointment at 130, you aren't kept waiting indefinitely, the vet gets in and sees you very punctually, which is great when you have a stressed pet on your hands. I would highly recommend them and will continue to bring our pet there.

Dr. Smith is the best! The staff is kind and caring! Office is right off Chippewa near Hampton, very convenient. The practice is set up with separate exam rooms right when you walk in, which you are placed in immediately upon arrival. I have a nervous dog, and you don't have to wait in a waiting room with other pets, which is ideal for me. Highly recommend!!

Writing a review for any medical professional is hard. When things go well, we tend to believe they are the best there is, but sadly, when things go badly, we believe we trusted butchers. I am not qualified to speak about Dr Smith's knowledge or capabilities, but I can speak about my personal experience. One of our cats was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, after few nights at VSS, he came back home but was lethargic and not interacting with us as much as he used to. Before we'd make any rushed decisions about euthanasia, or rushed him to another stressful trip to the vet, we reached out to Dr Smith (in tears, may I add), who had the animal's best interests at heart and agreed to a phone consult, she asked to see a video of him moving around and breathing and she was able to confirm that our cat needed a whole lot of rest. She talked us off a ledge during a time our family was most vulnerable and made sure that the least stressful and most beneficial care was provided. When the time came for my cat's follow-up, she was genuinely excited and happy to tell us how well his heart and chest sounded. It was not just an exchange of information but it was a genuine reaction from someone who cared. My cat lived 22 happy months after the initial diagnosis of congestive heart failure. He passed away suddenly 2 weeks ago and when we rushed him to Dr Smith, she ran out of the exam room to check on my cat and us. She hugged us, gave us time and space to say goodbye, helped us with the arrangements, and consoled us. Her whole staff did exactly the same. In my experience, Dr Smith has always acted with our pets best interests at heart. The whole team have always been sweet and prompt with any of our requests and questions. We can't foresee outcomes, but if there is one thing I can foresee, is that when I take my pets to the vet, they will be in the hands of a very caring team and I could not be more grateful for that.
