How to Save Money at Family Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Family Pet Hospital was one of my favorite vets to take my cats to, and I was so sad to lose them upon moving away from the St. Louis area. Dr. Collins was friendly and so good with both of my cats whenever they needed to go for annual checkups and vaccinations. She would help both animals feel at ease during their visits. If either cats had health issues or needed medications, setting up an appointment or requesting medicine was an easy phone call to the front desk. The receptionists are super friendly and helpful and easy to work with. I would recommend this place 10x over in trusting them with your pet's health!

We love Family Pet Hospital and have been going here for years! When our dog tore his CCL, other vet offices quoted us thousands for extensive surgery that wasn't needed. This hospital saved us thousands and our dog has had no issues since the surgery. Because of their honesty and genuine care of the animals, we started taking our dog here and have been referring people ever since.

We love everything about Family Pet Hospital! My cats have seen all doctors there and they all are amazing. So incredibly kind, patient and caring. They have helped ease my fears after getting a tough diagnosis that wound up being terminal for one of my cats. Even though he had to be put down at an emergency clinic, the doctor still called me after hours to talk about everything. Recently, my kitten had some complications and they have been wonderful caring for him and answering my questions. All of the staff is so friendly and comforting! I’m so thankful we found such a great practice to care for my family. Thank you to everyone at Family Pet Hospital!!

This review is overdue, but I couldn’t be more thankful for Dr Feagans and her entire staff for the care of my ferret Haku. Haku had an enlarged spleen that was so big it was pushing down on his other organs. He stopped moving and eating and I really thought I would have to put him down. They recommended an exploratory surgery and ended up removing his spleen. He has improved 100% and I am so so thankful and honestly shocked that he is completely back to normal and better than ever. They squeezed him in for appointments more than once, gave expert care, treated me with kindness and empathy, and saved Haku’s life. Everything was also extremely affordable including the surgery. I was unsure if surgery was the right option because I was scared it wouldn’t solve the problem/potential complications but a staff member told me about her personal experience with the surgery with a couple of her ferrets which made me feel a lot better. I recommend this clinic to everyone and will be a lifelong customer!

The receptionists at Family Pet are awesome- they're friendly, quick and willing to help with anything you may need during your visit. Dr. Collins is fantastic! She is the only vet I trust with my 3 fur brats. She's friendly, understanding, very knowledgeable and she really does care. My extremely spicy girl, Lilith, is on the road to recovery from a horrible case of cystitis after her visit to see Dr. Collins. I was better educated on what steps to take after the visit and am so very thankful that I was able to get my girl in there so quickly. I highly recommend Dr. Collins and the rest of the staff at Family Pet Hospital!
