How to Save Money at Barry Road Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google

Barry Road Animal Hospital is the best vet I’ve ever been to. The vets are experienced and knowledgable, and have saved my dog’s life multiple times suggesting treatments that other vets did not mention. They seem to truly care about and know how to help older dogs. The vets have amazing bedside manners and the front office is run incredibly well, with friendly staff. Really an incredible combo of 1) experienced and caring vets 2) empathetic bedside manner 3) well organized and friendly front office staff 4) clean and comfortable offices 5) easily available appointments you can schedule online

We recently received care from Dr. Cintron Ruiz for our 12 year old setter. This was our 3rd appointment in 5 weeks for a toe wound that will not heal. Dr. Ruiz started the appointment listening to my concerns while taking notes and reviewing the prior 2 appointments. I appreciate the time she took to understand our concerns from the beginning. Dr. Ruiz then did a detailed assessment to include all the body systems and asked questions regarding past history. Again, I appreciated the extra time she spent to try and understand why this wound is not healing. She was caring and compassionate as I voiced my concerns for quality of life. She reviewed all his medications and asked questions about his pain, this was important to me as we have been monitoring his weak hind quarters. She helped make a plan to remove the cone, showed me how to wrap his foot, and gave instructions regarding cleaning and topical medication. Lastly, she noted that his fur was causing him to slip when walking. She took the time the trim his foot pads while teaching me how I can do this at home. Marilyn, the vet tech was also exceptional. She slowly moistened the scabs around our dogs toe bed and delicately removed them to help clean the wound. Our dog did not even wince as she was careful and precise with her motions. Thank you Dr. Ruiz and Marilyn for your care! We are incredibly thankful for the Barry Road Animal Hospital and their team.

My first time in the practice and I found the staff to be very nice and also professional. Dr Rueb spoke with confidence and professionalism and relayed a very bad prognosis for my old dog in a kind and caring manner. I would not hesitate to return to this practice.

We've been going to northland animal hospital since 2020 but needed a prescription filled for my 14 year old dog and when I called them to check the status was told they no longer have a vet on staff. They suggested I contact Barry Road Animal Hospital. I called Saturday morning and they squeezed me in that day so our prescription didn't lapse. Starting with the phone call, Melissa was very kind and helpful. Dr. Ruiz gave my dog the most thorough exam my dog has ever received and listened to all our concerns regarding our aging dog. Her approach was very methodical and her treatment plan was very well thought out. Because we were changing vets, the exam was complimentary. I wasn't expecting that and feel that she went above and beyond a typical checkup. I would've happily paid for the exam and additional personal care, but left only paying for medications. I don't know what's going on with northland animal hospital, but I'm grateful that I've found Barry Road AH. We've found a new vet for our dog and any future pets. I can't thank Melissa, Dr. Ruiz, the vet assistant, and the other vet that was there enough for helping us during the uncertainty occurring at our previous clinic.

My husband and I have both had bad experiences here. The admin and doctors are rude and condescending. I thought maybe it was us... because we LOVED Northland Animal Hospital and when they closed we were sent here, so maybe I had high standards. But I've talked to 2 other clients of this place and they had similar experiences! It seems like we're inconveniencing them by giving them our business.
