How to Save Money at VCA Main Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I usually don’t write reviews but this was such a traumatic experience for my grown children. We had to have another pet out to sleep several years ago and they were so compassionate & it was a very peaceful experience but I guess since they have changed ownership their values have changed because compassion didn’t happen & it was everything but a peaceful experience. My kids listened to their puppy cry so loudly when they were putting in the IV- they didn’t bother to try and give her anything to relax her. They gave her the medicine and it didn’t put her to sleep & dr said- they would just have to put the medication to put her to sleep in her chest. Dr also thought it was appropriate to crack jokes. People in the waiting room couldn’t believe how this was handled and was horrified by this as well. There is nothing that can take back this horrific experience but I can promise we will never recommend this place. We don’t want any family to go through what our adult children went though & their puppy Maggie Mae. When it is so horrific that your adult children can’t sleep you know it was bad. Shame on this place & the vet.

Today I had to say goodbye to the best dog in the world. The doctor and staff were so compassionate and understanding. I wanted my daughter to be there with him too and they let me wait hours until she could get there. Even though it took one of their treatment rooms up they let me sit with him for hours. When it was time they couldn’t have been any more compassionate about it. They have taken good care of him since I move here last year and today they let him leave this earth surrounded by love. A huge shout out to Dr. Rodney, Tyler and the rest of the staff. ❤️

2 weeks ago I called them. They have been my dogs vet for 12 years. They have treated her condition, managed pain, exc. On June 14 I called the office to get a Emergency appointment, I let them know I believe she has hit her Turing point and I didn’t believe I would be bringing her hone. I was Explaining the issue, and the very rude and unprofessional lady said they were booked I could try tomorrow, they couldn’t get me in recommended I call another vet. For 12 years I have taken the other animals here along with my elderly dog. I have purchased her pain meds at hundreds of dollars a month and any other medication they told me would help her quality of life. Then when it comes time for her to cross the bridge they leave myself and my children looking for another vet office!!! worst customer service, worst experience I have ever had, I do not recommend them! Won’t ever use them again. Go somewhere else where they actually care about your family member!! We will be switching to the office who helped our family in a great time of need, who were very professional and made the process as calm and peaceful as possible!

So far I've had nothing but great experiences with the staff and service at Main Street Pet Care! My dog is very anxious around new people but the welcoming staff always makes her feel comfortable and gets the job done! It's clear that they care about the well being and comfort of each animal.

Took my baby of 16 years to be laid to rest and this place made it the most traumatic experience. It’s already hard putting an animal down, but they made it even harder. Very long, drawn out, the doctor was very insensitive. They didn’t give her a sedative so she was very uncomfortable and crying so loud I had to leave the room. I once had another experience there years before a new owner and had a peaceful experience, we were placed in a beautiful chapel and this time we were placed at the front of the hospital where everyone got to hear her in pain and they left the door open and everyone could see what we were going through. This was by far the WORST experience I could’ve had putting down my fur baby. 10/10 do NOT recommend taking your pupper here. I do not wish this type of experience on anyone,
