How to Save Money at Kansas City Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is the best vet and team you will ever meet. Dr. Farmer is bright and clearly has experience with a wide array of animal cases and emergencies. She stayed all night with our dog even though they typically close at 2am. She helped arrange vet care for our dog for the rest of the weekend until she would be back. She tried everything she could think of to save our dog. She also watched our dog, looked for change, looked for response to medicine and accounted for all of that. She made time to talk to us during this process between triaging patients and emergency surgeries. She cared about how the entire experience was going to affect our family, including our children. Her team also cared greatly for our dog, nursed her back to health, did extra research to look into her rather obscure condition, they went above and beyond. Dr. Farmer made calls to other vets about our dog, did research, and put so much effort into making her better. She also is extremely reasonable and upfront about pricing. When I left our dog in her care I was given an itemized view of what we were looking at and told by her staff she is amazing at staying within those ranges. She is intelligent, compassionate, and reasonable. I cannot thank her and her team for saving our dog enough. The smile on my daughter’s face to know her dog was able to come home will stay with me forever. If you need ER vet care this is the only place in Kansas City to go!

rita wise

A shout out to Dr Kelly Farmer and staff for the care and wisdom demonstrated in the treatment of my 12 year old dog 17 days ago. I had tried another service the day before that really didn’t address the issues my dog had and didn’t care when I called back the next morning. But Dr Kelly and staff pressed in on helping my very sick dog and got her a med IV that put her on the road for healing. She now eats and keeps food and water down and has the most energy I’ve seen since our adoption 4 months ago. Thank you KCAE. I recommend every animal lover to keep them in mind

I would never suggest taking your dog here the wait was horrible we waited over 2 hours just to see the vet and I understand emergency vets are busy but waiting over 2 hours was to long while we had other dogs and pets at home, our dog was very uncomfortable the entire time we were there and they was very scared around the vet. Definitely trust your dogs intuition if your dog is scared in a place they should be comfortable in while being taken care of. Please look for different places before coming here i would have rather drove an hour to kansas for a 24 hour emergency vet clinic before I brought ny pet here if I would have known how the vet here was like.

Dr. Farmer and her staff were wonderful for me and our dog. Our dog is being treated for heartworms, and I was afraid her heart felt like it wasn't functioning properly, and our regular vet recommended I go to KC Animal Emergency. When I arrived, they were *really*, *really* busy, but I feel like the staff triaged patients, and set priorities, appropriately. For our dog, we discussed the situation, and I opted to leave for a couple of hours while they handled other animals, and I came back about 11:00 after they had performed an ultrasound and determined our dog was in no immediate danger. I'm glad there's an "after hours" vet resource up north!
