How to Save Money at Associated Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My vet recommended AVS after my cat was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism for the radioiodine treatment. Dr. Loyd and her staff were kind, straightforward, and answered all of my questions. Tech Janet was whom I spoke with at the consultation and during my cat's stay at AVS and she is a true gem! My cat is weary of anyone outside of our household and they were so kind and accommodating to him and providing me updates throughout his time there. It made me feel reassured that not only he was getting the treatment but also by people who truly care. Over a month post-procedure and my lil' buddies levels show that he no longer has Hyperthyroidism! Beyond grateful to the AVS team and that we have a facility in St. Louis that provides this treatment.

This place saved my pups life, words cat express how grateful and thankful I am for them, my dog wasn’t feeling to well and I called his vet but they wasn’t open do to an ice storm so they recommend this place on here answering machine. I called and was abled to be seen within the next 30 mins. What I thought was something as small as an upset Stomach turned out to be an emergency surgery needed. I really wasn’t prepared for that news but had to get with it for the sake of my baby boy. They kept me updated on him and made sure they didn’t send him home until he ate something. I want to thank Dr. Henson for performing his surgery and taking extra care of my baby. He was very informative and overall a great doctor. You can tell he loves animals. Dr Loder for answering all my questions I had while bricks was there, and all the vet tech & nurses who took great care of my baby boy. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! He’s currently resting right now, and is happy to be home. Next up is the road to recovery!!

I can't express how happy we are with how they treated our dog, Copper. Our general Vet recommended them to us when he came down with a serious case of pneumonia. After the first round of antibiotics from our vet didn't work, he was very weak, wouldn't eat, and we were terrified he wouldn't make it through the next day. Copper had to be placed on oxygen and was at AVS without us for 7 days, and had to be transferred to an animal hospital during the weekend then returned here Monday. Now Copper is back home with us, still on oxygen, but getting better every day. AVS took every phone call, let us go back and visit him in the ICU every day he was there and answered every 100 questions and concerns we had. I would just like to thank Dr Lloyd, the other vets, nurses and techs that worked with us and helped get Copper home.

I don't really do reviews, especially one where I have to talk about putting my baby to sleep... but the crew there made me feel so much love and comfort about the decision I had to make. It was the hardest thing I had to do and I'll miss him every single day... I still feel guilty about it and haven't forgiven myself, but everyone here was so caring and understanding and very honest with me and thats something I can appreciate. You guys are an amazing team, but I hope I don't have to come back here again 😢 RIP Odin, my adventurous, loving, funny, protective, handsome and very talkative baby boy 😊, mommy & daddy loves you forever & always 🖤🤍 08/2020-12/2023

I cannot say enough about how wonderful the team at AVS is. My 11 week old German Shepherd swallowed a landscaping rock unbeknownst to me. I brought Blue in to our primary veterinarian where radiographs were taken to confirm the foreign body. My primary veterinarian contacted AVS for specialty care. They were able to fit me in within 30 minutes of the consult with my veterinarian. Upon arrival they quickly obtained vitals and examined Blue. They performed an abdominal ultrasound to confirm the location of the foreign object and then proceeded with endoscopy to retrieve the item. Blue was lucky to be able to avoid a laparotomy. The staff was very compassionate and knowledgable regarding Blue's care and I am so thankful for them.
