How to Save Money at Pawportunities Animal Welfare Service

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Currently fostering for Pawportunities. This little boy is priceless and currently available to adopt. He’s all the things, good with children, good with another pet, sleeps all night(8 hrs), playful, loves chewing on bones, napping, cuddles, and he is cute as a button ❤️

I can't say enough good things about Pawportunities! Especially Beth and Jess. Beth was so kind and has continued to be a great resource for all of my questions, even answering the phone on Friday night when she wasn't working to calm my nerves when my puppy got hurt. She was very patient with my toddler son and even took his hand to go get puppy food while I was filling out paperwork. She is just all around a great person and I am so thankful for her. Jess is great, as well. She took the time on a Saturday to examine my dogs leg and answered all of my anxious dog mom questions. When I dropped him off on a Sunday and I was sad to leave him for surgery, Jess reassured me that she would give him lots of love and cuddles until I was able to pick him back up. I would recommend Pawportunities to anyone looking for a rescue that not only cares about the animals, but the fosters / adopters, too. Thank you Beth and Jess!!!

Terrible experience! I applied to adopt a puppy, filled out the application as instructed, and was told I’d be contacted—but I never heard back. Their process feels incredibly biased, especially considering they still charge $800!

We encountered an inconvenient situation where we had set up an appointment to meet and greet with a dog. We were texting with the person and met at the correct time. We drove 35 minutes just to find out the dog is with a foster. I feel icky leaving a bad review for a rescue shelter and I’m only leaving one based on the interaction with the woman working. She blamed us for the mishap that we were totally fine with, we just needed clarity on the dogs situation. Her attitude and demeanor made us not want to adopt from them. Compassion towards us would’ve gone a long way. But instead we were met with rudeness. There was no suggestion on any solution to the problem. We all have bad days I guess, but her customer service skills were simply uncalled for. She ONLY apologized as we were leaving. Still looking for our perfect puppy but sadly won’t be going here for it. I hope other people have better encounters with her. Edited to respond: The appointment was under Conrad for 5:30. The lady at reception confirmed that and was just awful about the mixup on your end. I am not from another shelter trying to disparage you. This was genuinely an awful interaction with the woman working.

I am a foster volunteer there and I have to say that the animal control in Blue Springs and the rescue staff are all just amazing. If you ever physically go there just be prepared that the rescue does not have its own building but is co-located with Blue Springs Animal Control. They accomplish a whole lot of rescues and adoptions due to the hard work and generosity of many(this includes the folks who donate, and volunteer!)💜 I am including my post about my recent Foster who was adopted on Thursday into a wonderful home!
