How to Save Money at St. Paul Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot stress enough how wonderful this clinic and the staff are. They've taken wonderful care of my cat, and recently when I had some issues with medication cost Andrea was exceptionally kind and accommodating and worked with me to get my kitty the meds she needed. Would recommend the Cathedral Hill location to any and all pet owners.

We have loved our experience at Saint Paul Pet Hospital so far! Our Penny absolutely loves everyone there and Dr. Charli and the techs have been really great at answering all my crazy questions! We have now had to start avoiding walking by on our walks because Penny whines at the door begging to go inside and say hi to everyone! Never thought I’d have a puppy who wants to go to the vet so bad! Truly couldn’t be more thankful for the incredibly positive experience we’ve had.

I heard of SPPH and Dr. Eric about 11 years ago… My Teddi was only 3 at that time but my neighbor was walking his dog at Mears Park where we lived, and he was so sad because he was going to have to put his dog Milo to sleep. The next day, Milo is back at the park playing with Teddi! I asked the owner what happened? He said “I took him to a different vet and he says he think he got more time”! I asked the name of the vet and I’ve been with them ever since….BTW Milo lived TWO more years! Fast forward, 11 years later and my Boy is 14…. Has been healthy his whole life, but recently got diagnosed with cancer in March. Under the expert care of Dr. Eric he is still with us living a quality life!! Almost all the dogs in my canine cancer Facebook group dx’d same time as Teddi are dead….😢 even some with Chemo….Being a retired medical professional, Just like there are good doctors and bad doctors, there are good and bad vets…. I truly feel some of the patients in my canine cancer group were not treated properly. I love everyone at this clinic. From the reception people to Vet Techs, they are all great!!! They have an excellent monthly care plan, which is worth it and I’ve been on for several years. The yearly cost of the plan alone is less than a teeth cleaning. I also feel you get prioritized if you have a problem. In the past week alone, Teddi had blood in his stool and a urinary tract infection.. both of these were treated over the phone.. I sent pictures and I brought in a urine sample and prescriptions were given… Even if there’s no appointments available if you’re on the plan, they do prioritize you and at least get a vet to look at the problem… I also like Dr. Eric’s compassion. He also believes in the quality of life and listens… After all, we spend the most time with our dogs so I appreciate that He listens to feedback as we plan Teddi’s last stage of life… I am so glad that I found this clinic 11 years ago. I will never go to another vet if I get Another pet after Teddi….

Saint Paul Pet Hospital is truly exceptional. The clinic is bright, clean, and welcoming, and the staff stands out for their genuine care and consideration for both pets and their families. I am especially grateful to Dr. Sarah and vet tech Jen, who cared for my beloved cat during his final moments. Their empathy and compassion for both him and me will forever be remembered.

I’ve been bringing my beloved lab here for several years and have had really great interactions with all the staff members and veterinarians here. My dog has needed two recent unplanned surgeries and they’ve been able to get him scheduled quickly. I’ve always really appreciated their kind care of my best bud, thanks St. Paul Pet!
