How to Save Money at Marschall Road Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Summary: I absolutely recommend this vet. They are so kind, accommodating, caring, and take the time to explain things to you. They don't rush you through and they take time to ask if you have any questions. Connor Dougherty, DVM was the veterinarian I met with at the first visit and it was his demeanor and kindness that made me switch our dogs to this vet. He also did my yorkie's dental procedure (see experience below) and has been wonderful in the aftercare. The front desk receptionist is so kind, professional, and caring as well as all the staff I've interacted with in just a few visits thus far. Detailed Personal Experience: I recently got a 2nd opinion from this vet on my almost 9 year old yorkie's (Ollie) teeth and decided to transfer both of our dogs to this vet. They are so kind and accommodating, give you opportunity to ask questions, don't rush you, and take the time to really explain things and ease your concerns. Ollie had his teeth extraction procedure done on October 5, 2023 and it went well. I was so nervous as this was my first time leaving him at a vet and first time with him having a procedure (his neutering was before I rescued him). They really helped reassure me. They called during the procedure to inform of more necessary extractions and provided updates on how he was doing. When I picked him up, Jenna (Vet Tech) did a wonderful job of explaining aftercare instructions and answering our questions. One of their Vet Techs (I'm sorry I don't know their name) told me how she wrapped my Ollie in a blanket and cuddled him when he was waking up. I had a hard time not tearing up and it makes me emotional as I write this, to know that they cared for my baby in the most compassionate and caring way. I called today with concerns about coughing and they explained it's pretty normal due to intubation during procedure to have some irritation or soreness in the throat for 24-48 hours. They said they were going to call today (Friday) for a check-in and I beat them to it with this call and that they'd reschedule the check-in call for tomorrow (Saturday). So incredibly thankful to Marschall Road Animal Hospital for taking such good care of my Ollie.

Firstly, they were able to squeeze me in last minute. Secondly, they were upfront about prices. Thirdly, they spent time getting familiar with my dog and let me ask as many questions as I could think of. I never felt rushed and all my questions were thoughtfully answered. Fourthly, the staff could not have been kinder or more attentive - they calmed both my dog and me. Lastly, I highly recommend this vet.

We were surprised at the shortage of walk-in and emergency services available. Marschall accommodated an appointment within hours on short notice. When we were met with the worst possible news the vet techs handled everything with empathy and professionalism. They took great care of our pup.

I Love the way they care for my Angel. I have moved away from Shakopee but I still bring Angel there because of the quality of care they provide for my Dog. They are amazing. I Love that they call and check on Angel. That's awesome and it means a lot to me. Thanks for the quality of care you give my Angel girl. You guys are amazing ❤️❤️❤️

They employ the most abrasive, unhelpful female assistant who, in my opinion as the owner of 30 dogs in my lifetime and the veteran of hundreds of vet appointments should be fired.when I tried to book an emergency appointment for my dog who had been receiving treatment for over 3 months for a serious infection which had suddenly become worse I was told that they are “Primary” vets and emergency care must be done elsewhere. In that case I would recommend that this clinic only be used for simple elective treatments and wellness checks. I went to VCA (I have used them in two other states and always found them to give excellent care)and received immediate appointment, they got my records from former vet, devised a treatment protocol, and made a referral to a specialist surgeon, all in one appointment. Guess they are not just Primary Care vets! I should add that we had only just moved to town but had already taken another of our dogs in to see them. I will say t the vet I saw and his male assistant at that time were very friendly and had it not been for the arrogant female who I dealt with this review would not have been written. Emergency treatment is of paramount importance.
