How to Save Money at Minnetonka Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My favorite vet I have ever been to. The doctors and nurses make you feel like you and your animals are family. They take amazing care of my rabbits. So lucky to have them as my veterinarian! Thank you Minnetonka Animal Hospital for taking care of us!

Our diabetic cat had a medical emergency while I was in out of state leaving my wife to deal with this situation alone. Our regular vet was understaffed and could not help. We called up Minnetonka Animal Hospital because they were the closest to our house. They said that we could bring him in. When we got in the door, they started treating him immediately. They prioritized his health over filling out paperwork and were able to get his blood sugar back up and food in his belly. Unfortunately, his blood sugar crashed again and the damage to him was just too much. At that point, they explained the facts to us we’re prepared to help us if we decided to continue treatment, and most importantly helped us decide that it was time to let it go. They explained everything over the phone so that my wife and I could make the decision together and they went out of their way to show sympathy and kindness after his death. They embodied everything that you could possibly want of a vet in a situation like that. We are so blessed that they were there to give our cat a chance at life and that they took care of everyone when it was time to let him go.

Our rabbit stopped eating and we rushed her to an emergency vet clinic. We were told she most likely had a dental issue and needed an exploratory surgery and then an actual surgery, but every rabbit vet I could find was backed up for months! I called every rabbit vet on a list I was given by the ER clinic and was thrilled when Dr. Hotaling agreed to see her right away-that afternoon! Turned out our rabbit had been misdiagnosed and she had a simple problem that was immediately (and cheaply) solved! We decided to bring our cats and Dr. Boero and Dr. Howe have both cared for them, helped us with our senior cat, and given them both great dental care. We are so grateful we stumbled on this clinic and highly recommend them all! The techs are fantastic too-we’ve had follow up emails and calls after each visit and when meds are needed they take the extra time to really talk you through it. 10/10, 5 stars, highly recommend!

I recently brought my cat and dog to Minnetonka Animal Hospital for the first time and was very impressed with the quality of the facility and the care we received. The vets accommodated my dog’s lack of socialization well, and they were able to get lab results back within 30 minutes of my appointment. I especially appreciated their communication before and after the appointment. Most appreciated was their swift fill of my cat’s prescription 1 day before I was scheduled to travel internationally for 2 weeks. I look forward to being a regular at this animal hospital.

As long as I've had rabbits, I've brought them to Minnetonka Animal Hospital. The staff is phenomenal. Every person there just wants the best for your pet and it shows. They've answered every question I've ever had and eased any anxiety I had about my pets' health. My girls, Laverne & Shirley, started sneezing recently, so I took them to Minnetonka Animal Hospital to make sure everything was fine. The staff were wonderful with my girls and we don't have any more sneezes! I'd recommend them not just to bunny and other exotic pet owners, but to any pet owners.
