How to Save Money at Allied Veterinary Service

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The other night, our dear, sweet Chihuahua, Sasha, experienced what can only be described as sudden death, some sort of cardiac event we’re guessing, anyway we rushed her to Allied while performing CPR hoping there was something that could be done, there was not. They were communicative and respectful for what we were going through. They recommended Pets Remembered Cremation Service in New Brighton and then proceeded to set it up for us so there was nothing we had to do. I really can’t say enough good things about the staff, and how kind, compassionate and patient they were with us. I feel so fortunate to live close by so if my other pets experienced an emergency, I have not only a close resource to my home, but a trustworthy one.

I brought my cat in for repeated vomiting and diarrhea. It was right before Christmas so we had limited options and places were filling up quick. I decided to bring my cat in to Allied. Bringing in a pet to an emergency vet at night is inevitably a miserable experience. We waited several hours (quoted 3-4, actual about 5) and it's not fun being surrounded by pets who are doing much worse. The staff at Allied were extremely kind, patient, and caring. They even helped one woman with no ride home call a taxi late at night. We were much happier once we finally got a room and my cat was able to get out of his carrier. Things moved quickly once we talked to the vet. She was very attentive and understanding, and she walked us through our options while outlining costs at every step of the way. The vet and staff there that night were definitely some superwomen, I don't know how they made it through the night with some of the sad cases I overheard. I was confident my cat still received the attention and care he deserved and we left with a good plan for care clearly written out to be easy to follow for my sleep deprived self. I hope you're never in this position but if you are, Allied is a great place to go.

We are eternally grateful for the care our pet received at Allied emergency in Minneapolis. They diagnosed an early urinary obstruction in our male cat - likely saving his life - at midnight on a Sunday. The triage was excellent as they took him back to check for a blockage immediately upon our arrival. They explained everything to my partner and me in great detail. I appreciate the careful care the staff took to educate, which helped us make the medical decisions in the best interest of our pet. Once the choice was made to hospitalize him overnight, they let us see him and pet him before we left. I was crying and largely inconsolable during the entire intake, so this kindness was especially touching. I called to check in on him twice the next day, and they always gave me an update on how he was doing even though I’m sure they were busy. They also worked with us to help create an aftercare plan with his primary doctor. I work reception at a local vet clinic, and they were very accommodating in arranging transfer of care for the following week. All this is to say, I cannot praise the staff at Allied highly enough. I am so thankful they are open 24/7 and recommend them to any pet parent who is in need of emergency care.

I cannot say enough good things about Allied Emergency Vet! They took such great care of my dog. They were incredibly careful and thorough with his care and I felt very at ease through the entire visit. Fairly affordable for an emergency vet visit, too. They are also incredibly transparent about the cost. I was told how much the visit was going to be and what the test would cost before I even arrived at the clinic. Once we had a better idea of his care, they provided me a very detailed estimate. He came home with a big smile on his face and is back to normal today! Thank you all SO much!

Amazing compassion and response at 2AM! My 15 year old dog was having continuous seizures and did not have any recovery time in between the seizures. I called Allied and they said they could see him but the ICU was full. I brought him to Allied and was taken care of right away. Tests were offered right at first and I explained his age and that diagnostics were probably not necessary. It became clear that this was a euthanasia situation. The staff could not have been more supportive and my buddy was peacefully put to sleep while I held him. Pricing was amazing compared to other emergency visits at other providers. I chose to take him for cremation and they put him in a box all wrapped up and said if I wanted to pet him they left his head and shoulders for me to pet. It was very kind and extremely gentle on their part. I will never go to another emergency vet as long as I have furry four legged family members. THEY GET IT!!!
