How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
We were met at the door with a staff oozing with compassion and a dedication to make sure their patient (our golden retriever puppy, Sequoia) and my husband and I were comfortable and as stress free as possible. Sequoia got all the love and pets her heart desired all while staff made sure she was stable and comfortable. What could have been a really scary, traumatic experience for her young puppy self was just one of her many adventures where she met more people to give her love and pets. Thank you for taking such good care of her. Thank you for taking such good care of her nervous parents!

Mikey was a buoyant 12 year old red cat. In the morning he would run down the stairs to the kitchen as I hobbled behind. He would jump to the counter for his small bowl of milk. Though he was a big cat, he was gentle with the others. For the last couple of weeks he had been less interactive and was eating less. We had noticed he was drooling with a foul odor to the saliva and made an appointment with our veterinarian, expecting gingival disease with a recommendation for dental extraction. Mikey crashed on Saturday, Sept. 21. We found him listless on a chair in my workshop. Our veterinary office is closed on weekends. I was aware of a new emergency veterinary office, VEG in Maple Grove, and we took Mikey there immediately. Our first impression was positive. We were greeted by several people and saw a few dogs being examined as the techs/docs knelt beside them. It all seemed great. The doctor did a quick examination of Mikey with a cursory look at his teeth and gums and said he was dehydrated and needed some blood work before she could offer a diagnosis and treatment plan. We went to a room with Mikey where we waited 90 minutes while many techs/ students/ and other staff milled about around a couple of dogs in the main room. It looked like a choreographer's idea of busyness. No one came in to draw blood until I stepped out to ask about the delay. Then I received a VEG message on my iPhone asking for $600 prepayment for lab and initial exam. I agreed, the blood was drawn, and about 1/2 hour later the doctor stepped in to say liver and kidney function was normal. As she had done a perfunctory initial mouth exam on Mikey, I asked her to look again. The doctor looked briefly and told me Mikey had only the expected gingival disease for a cat his age. She recommended an overnight stay for intravenous fluids as well as other studies and xrays for an additional $3000+. We agreed on 6 hours of IV fluids and drove home, returning at 10 PM to take him home, retrieving him from the chilly cat treatment room. There was no diagnosis. There was an additional charge of ~$1800, subsequently reduced to $1000 for a total charge of $1600 for these miserable 10 hours for Mikey. Yesterday Mikey was more active. He ate some wet food. He joined us in bed and lay on my chest while we patted and loved him. Today at our veterinary office, the doctor found a large ulcerated lesion in Mikey's throat on the left. I saw it readily as she held his mouth open. It was almost certainly cancer, accompanied by enlarged submandibular lymph nodes. It had interfered with Mikey's swallowing. Mikey was euthanized. He went peacefully, cradled by me and my wife. We are thankful for our many good years with Mikey and for the gentle and skilled end of life care from our veterinary office. I am angry at the VEG glitter with no substance. I am angry at the ten hours Mikey spent at a facility that did not care about him.

I had to bring my dog, Jax, in to be put down due to some health issues that kept getting worse, and we were unable to wait until the morning to take him to our regular vet. The staff at Veg were caring and supportive. The vet said wonderful things to my dog as she put him down and made the hardest situation better with their support and kindness. About a week after, we received the most thoughtful and personalized handwritten sympathy card from all the staff at Veg. If you ever find yourself in an emergency situation like mine, Veg is definitely the place to go.

From the moment I walked in with my dog, we were treated with kindness and professionalism. There was no wait—we were seen immediately and never separated from our dog, which was a huge relief! The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making sure both my dog and I felt comfortable throughout the entire visit. My dog was a bit nervous at first, but the vet and team handled everything with so much care and patience. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for a top-notch experience.
