How to Save Money at Bemidji Veterinary Hospital & Boarding Kennel

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We left for "up north" for a month right after our dog had a surgery. Long story short, she ended up with an infection. Bemidji Veterinary was able to get us in right away and helped us get everything squared away. Dr. Pillar was great. It was worth an hour drive to get there.

AWESOME vet visit. From the very first call with Robin to the actual visit with Dr Rowan, we were treated with kindness and helpfulness. They actually cared about my dog and treated her tenderly and patiently. I can't say enough good things about our visit. Thank you!

These wonderful people saved the life of our cat (Echo) when she was terribly mauled by a neighborhood dog. The dog pulled her down from a tree, ripping all of her claws out. It shook her and caused countless (30+) puncture wounds on her sides and rear leg. It very seriously was trying to kill her. All of the veterinarians that helped us were absolutely incredible. They worked magic saving her initially, then they worked magic again helping with followup problems. The technicians were also very caring and gentle with her - when she had to spend time in kitty hospital, I felt confident that she was in good hands. As Echo was healing, we were warned that her leg might be permanently lame due to the severity of her injuries. Nowadays, I am very pleased to say that Echo recovered 99%! It's all because of the care she received at this facility. She just can't jump as high as she used to and she keeps that leg a bit stiff as she sprints (yes, SPRINTS) around the house. Her claws completely grew back in. She healed up better than we ever could have hoped. Every time I look at her, I think about how much I appreciate still having her in our family. If you'd seen Echo after the attack, you would know that these folks truly did work a literal miracle. They gave us up to 15 more years of time with our baby girl. Side note: this happened when Delta was surging. Many other veterinary practices were closed and not seeing any patients (even for critical cases!!!). Bemidji Veterinary Hospital remained open and they even found time to see her on an emergency basis. God bless these people for coming into work during risky times and caring for our family members. If your pet is in need of any kind of veterinary care, I strongly recommend you bring them here. The staff are highly competent, dedicated, and very clearly have a deep love of animals!

Absolute worst. Brought in our dog with a cough, put her on kennel cough meds(without actually looking at her symptoms) She wasn’t doing well- not eating, losing weight, shedding hair, sores on her feet, limping. They were going to send us home with anti inflammatory pills, and I had to advocate to do more blood work. Turns out she has pancreatitis. 3 days later she can’t even walk, breathing heavy, and her symptoms are getting way worse. Never once pushed for an exam. They watched her deteriorate in front of their own eyes in 3 days. and they still thought we should do blood work. (When she can’t even put her head up at this point) I personally posted on Instagram what is wrong with my dog and everyone said blasto. They misdiagnosed her and now she’s in fargo in critical condition. Worst experience, they literally watched our dog die. Went through 3 doctors over there not ONE thought it was blasto. Told them she plays in the river and they should have known right then and there it was blasto. It’s so common here in bemidji (now that I know, after during my own research) will never step foot in that place again. They run through pets like cattle.
