How to Save Money at South Lyon Animal Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Herman and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. They helped our baby girl Isa pass over the rainbow bridge. I thank them so much for helping us and making it go so smooth. I highly recommend South Lyon Animal Clinic and will be using them in the future for my other pets.

I started taking my dog here I believe it was last year. His main doctor we see is Dr. Hunt, she is super sweet and kind. I have had really bad luck in the past with vets but she would get on the floor with my dog and seemed like she truly cared. This past Thanksgiving though I noticed my dog had what I thought was a skin tag on the top of his head, but it was growing which I thought was weird. I was able to get him in very quickly which I really appreciated since I was worried it could be cancerous. She looked at Milo and took a biopsy and said she would call me back with results, she ended up calling me back the same day and went over all my questions and gave me advice as well. The vet clinic was actually closed at the time she had called but she didn't make me feel rushed at all over the phone which I really appreciated. The biopsy in house came back and she thought it was a wart, but we had decided to go ahead and do surgery to remove it in case it was something else. The doctor who did his surgery was Dr. Hermann. I have not met Dr. Hermann in person, but she also has been nothing but kind and helpful. I have called multiple times after Milo's surgery with questions and concerns and other symptoms that have come up since his procedure. And she has been nothing but helpful. I had concerns with Milo drooling excessively and I noted that to the front desk staff and they were going to add it on to his appointment to take his stitches out. When I asked if it would cost extra I asked them for Dr. Hermann to not worry about looking at this extra symptom because I have been short on money. But she ended up looking at him anyway for free! But once again my dog had more issues and I ended up finding what looked like a rash on his neck. Dr. Hermann said to just send her a picture through their email and she "diagnosed" and treated right through the email at no cost. I could not be more grateful for these doctors!! I truly feel like they care about their furry patient's that come in and that I could not be any more grateful!

I've been bringing my dog to this clinic for about 13 years now. I've always felt more like a friend than just a client with money. I was a little skeptical when Walled Lake Animal Clinic bought it after my vet retired. Front staff are still the same, and they are amazing. My dog is 14.5 years old, and he's been going since 2008. The two new women are wonderful. We've been going back and forth a bit about a spot on my dog's shoulder. He seems great and is still my silly little monster. Their prices might be a bit higher than other offices around, but with their gentle, caring nature and their love for animals, I'm willing to spend the extra money. Plus, they're really in depth with you about your animal They make sure you understand everything going on before you leave. I pass several offices on my way here, but that rough hour drive is so worth it.

We had a 2:30 appointment for our cat who was urinating blood. We walked in at 2:42, people walked in behind us with 2 dogs. We both had appointments at the same time (the gentlemen said so when they asked what time their appt was for), they took the dogs but denied us cause the doctor “had a call.” Our cat is dying and they couldn’t be bothered to “squeeze us in” and offered to take us in the following day, despite us living a half hour away and needing a babysitter for 2 children under 2 (it’s not easy to find one). Needless to say, this is one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a vet and is compounded by the fact that my cat is dying and may not make it through the night. Thanks for the help!

Having recently moved to a new city, I've been unable to obtain a vet because most aren't accepting new patients. Because my dog had been bitten by something unknown, I needed an immediate appointment. All of the emergency vet clinics had unreasonable "fees" and "wait times" (8-10 hour waits, and you had to be onsite). I was able to immediately get an appointment with South Lyon Animal Clinic. Although it was quite a drive, I will be using them going forward for all of my pet's needs. Not only is the staff friendly, but Dr. Bernadette Hermann was wonderful. Not currently working, I held my breath during checkout expecting an astronomical bill, especially having just spent almost $700 with a previous vet because my dog lost her toenail. Surprisingly, the bill with South Lyon was reasonable and affordable. I'm happy and my dog is now happy!
