How to Save Money at Lyon Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Just had our cat spayed. Been coming regularly for our dog and always felt like the service and care was top notch. If you’re getting an animal fixed opt in for the laser it’s worth it! Such a clean incision and no stitches, my cat has been doing great and not bothering the surgery site. Highly recommend them for spay/neuter. Sure you pay a higher price but I couldn’t get an appointment booked with any humane society for months.

I LOVE this place! After visiting just about every vet in an hour radius from here, I can confidently say this is by far the best veterinary clinic out there. My dog Maya has had every medical condition possible, from seizures, to tumors, skin issues, etc. So it has been a hassle trying to find the best fit for her medically but also financially on my end. Animal care is not cheap to say the least! Here at Lyon Veterinary Clinic, they actually make the already "not so fun" visits smooth and enjoyable! The front staff seem to truly enjoy what they do because they are very kind and helpful from the moment you walk in, to the end of the visit. The vets are very knowledgeable; great at communicating the issues and ultimately the plans to resolve them. The team as a whole does not seem to be too over loaded, which unfortunately can be the case with some vet clinic's (and typically leads to stressed employees and patients not receiving the proper care that is needed, not fun for anyone involved). This Lyon Vet Clinic is clean, organized, and not difficult to contact over the phone if you need to schedule an appointment or have any further questions. 10/10! I usually do not write reviews, good or bad, but I had to take the time to relay my gratitude after countless "not so great" past experiences from various vet clinics in Michigan. I have recommended this place to friends/family and will continue to go here. Thank you all for everything you do! :)

Took in 3 baby rats today. Received meds for them. I'm supposed to medicate them each close to .3mL 2x/ day for 14 days. The total mL med volume is labeled .30mL (which is .3!) but the bottle somehow contains 1.5mL total. Not even enough to do twice for one day. I waited 30 minutes past my appointment time. It's an hour drive one way. I paid over $100 and didn't even get enough medicine for their prescribed treatment.

I love this vet. The office is clean and well managed. Friendly faces greet you and your pet. They only schedule as many pets as they can handle so the waiting room is never crowded Dr. Henderson is very kind.

For several months I thought about trying another veterinarian for my almost 12 year old dog. When we went to Lyon Veterinary Clinic, we were greeted by a friendly staff, didn't have to wait long, and when the doctor came into the room, she listened to my concerns and gave him the necessary shots and heartworm pills. She was efficient and knowledgable and I will continue to take my dog there.
