How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Service West
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
On a referral, I called them late today and they were able to get my cat in tonight on a Saturday. The whole process only took about an hour and a half. Everyone was extremely kind, efficient and took good care of him. When I first arrived they took him to a different room without me, to look him over. After we discussed what we were going to do, I asked them to bring him back into me to wait with me and they did, no problem. 5 stars!!

If you have the option to go to another emergency vet, I strongly recommend doing so. On two separate occasions, this clinic advised euthanasia for my senior chihuahua, and thankfully, I didn’t listen to them. Both times, she fully recovered after seeking care elsewhere. The first incident involved a dog bite. They claimed she would never eat again and suggested putting her down. The second time, she had pyometra, and they told me surgery would be pointless due to her age and that she had sepsis. They sent me home with palliative care instructions and said she wouldn’t survive more than 12-24 hours, again recommending euthanasia. Desperate for help, I took her to another emergency vet, where she received compassionate and expert care. She’s now doing much better. This clinic seems more focused on profit than on truly helping animals and their owners. I can’t help but wonder how many pets are unnecessarily euthanized here. I will never return.

We have been to VESW twice for two different feline emergencies. Both cats were seen by Dr. Roux and had good outcomes. The first visit was during covid, and we had to drop our kitty off inside the vestibule and wait in the parking lot. That was difficult, but it wasn’t VESW’s fault—they were doing the best they could under difficult circumstances. We were given great advice with compassion both times, and our cats were not subjected to any unnecessary testing. We are grateful to have a resource like VESW so close to home.

Ok I'd love to know how they are still in operation. My family took their fur baby there for what we thought was an emergency. Upon arriving my family was told to wait in the car and they would call to bring him in. They waited 45 minutes and never was called in. My family decided to leave since there's another emergency vet could take him to. When my family was leaving they saw the staff watching them leave. It was then the veterinary tried calling. There were only two others ahead of my family and they were seen and left all while my family was sitting there waiting to take their fur baby in. Extremely unprofessional and uncaring. They should not be in operation. If your pet can make it to the Animal Emergency Center in Novi, go there. I've been there before and they are professional and very caring of your fur baby.

Excellent service! I went to this emergency veterinarian when my dog had a hard piece of plastic stuck around her back tooth. I called beforehand and they took down all my information so they would be ready to go when we arrived. There was no wait and they took my dog right in the back and had the piece out within 5 minutes and did not even charge me since the whole process was so quick. The staff was incredibly kind and efficient. Five stars and would highly recommend.
