How to Save Money at Pinecrest Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Stella had been limping and not really bearing weight on her back leg for a week. I was hoping for a bruise or pulled muscle. No such luck, she had a broken hip. Dr.Kenny and Sam were so wonderful with her, caring and compassionate. Everything was explained to me as far as treatment and what the plan was. I had called on a Thursday morning and Shelby was able to get me worked in so Stella could be seen. They were quick to see her once I arrived and and treated us with the upmost compassion. I cant thank them enough for the care that my Stella received. I would highly recommend Pinecrest to anyone looking for amazing care for their pets.

I will recommend everyone I know to send their pet to this vet! Our dog needed emergency surgery for an item blocking his intestines. The emergency vet in Lansing told us to euthanize or pay 6k for surgery. We called pine crest and they said bring him in we can do it for about 2k. Well, we took him in, paid for the surgery, left him there, and the vet looked at the X-rays and said “I’m going to take him for a walk to see what happens” and the item came out the other end at no cost to us whatsoever! They refunded us the money and we took him home that day. They could’ve made really easy money that day, but the integrity and care from this staff saved my pet and saved us a lot of money!!! I will now drive the hour from my home to take my dogs here as their primary care just because they are so trustworthy to me as people who really care for the animal and owner, not just the money.

From working with Dr. Kenny for the last three years, I can sincerely say the high quality of his personal and professional character has been repeatedly confirmed. He happily chose to take under his care, my beautiful pastel calico “kitty”, Rachel, who was difficult to treat. While never hurting anyone, she was a devoted “one-person” cat who was a consistently feisty and fractious “fraidy-cat”, with professional caregivers or people she didn’t know. She just passed on April 6 (2023) at 19 years old, from a gradual decline in thyroid, kidney and heart functions. Kenny always and happily, took the time to walk and talk me through the medical and emotional dimensions of her aging. He and his staff consistently revealed the highest level of expertise in discerning and caring for her needs, and a genuine investment in choosing the wisest course of action to maintain her maximum level of health. They patiently addressed any concerns, and answered all of my questions. And when finally losing her, Kenny was insightfully willing to process my own natural grieving of the absence of such a beloved, faithful and long-time companion. As many reading will readily affirm, our pets become family. He and the staff gave every indication that their work is inspired by that awareness, holding an authentic respect and love for the animals brought to their care, and mirroring the relationship they have with their own pets. I’ve grown to truly appreciate and trust Dr. Kenny as both a vet and human being. I gratefully consider him a friend, under whose care I would not hesitate to entrust any future furry companions.

I brought my cat Gus in for an emergency visit, unfortunately when the Veterinarian came to check him he became agitated and didn’t want to cooperate. Gus has stopped eating, was vomiting and became lethargic. Instead of figuring out a way to see what was wrong, I was sent home with pills and told to reschedule. My follow-up appointment was set for 6 days later. I came for an emergency visit and told to come back 6 days later. The next day I called the office and told the office that Gus was worse and the he is now vomiting yellow bile and they prescribed more pills. I said I would come pick them up and when I tried later that day the office was closed for a staff meeting! You would think the person I spoke to would have relayed that information, but no. I finally got Gus into a Vet 30 minutes away and his temp was down to 90 degrees and they wanted to do bloodwork. Unfortunately, within about 10 minutes of him being there he had a seizure and died. If the vet at Pinterest would have done more and not scheduled follow up 6 days later my Gus may still be here. But on the Tuesday I took my cat in they had a day full of dog surgeries and didn’t seem to have the time to be bothered by my cat’s emergency. Care was horrible, communication within the office was horrible and now because of their negligence my Gus Gus is gone. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Our newest puppy addition to the family was seen today by the new doctor, Dr. Tori. She was simply amazing! She was so patient and thorough. She has a great method in keeping our girl calm and steady so she could give her shots. Our awesome tech Lia has great energy and takes her time explaining what each vaccine is for and allowing us to make the decisions. Our girl adored her. Thank you ladies for the best care and service today.
