How to Save Money at VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough good things. I brought my cat here with several concerns about her health. The staff is amazing. They are kind and caring. We found out she is diabetic and the staff has been with me every step of the way, answering any question I may have regarding treatment. I've called them nearly every day with a new question or concern, and they have been extremely patient and kind. I can't recommend this place enough.

Sad, very sad day for me as I ended up putting my beloved dog down. The staff was sensitive to my needs. Their work up was thorough and helpful. Fortunately they gave me time to consult with my son by phone and I feel it was the right thing to pay for all the tests. To prolong my dog's suffering given the circumstances I think I made the right decision. I don't know about the existence of heaven but if there is one he is there running around to keep my wife company.

My old guy was really not feeling well and I needed to get into the Vet asap. My current Vet had a last minute appointment for me but reneged and then could not make space for us. To be fair it was a Monday, which can get kinda crazy at a Vet office. I called Oshtemo Animal Hospital and they got back to me right away to come in as a new client. The front staff was very nice. When I arrived the parking was easy, the lobby was clean and we got into a room quick. Dr. Amber Dickson was great! Loved the ease of her exam and treatment plan. She listened with empathy to my concerns and seemed in lock step with our needs for our pup. We got medications filled and recheck exam set up. I got everything I needed that day and was happy with the price. They are not cheap, nor should they be for excellent care. I believe the pricing to be fair. More so, we are happy to have finally found a Veterinary hospital of quality in the Kalamazoo area. Thanks Dr. Dickson

Our cat, Rose, broke one of her teeth and needed surgery. They were able to get her in the next 2 days instead of waiting over 2-3 weeks like most places just to be seen. They ended up having to take another tooth out. They told us about the care club which saved us so much money and we couldn’t be more grateful for that and for the excellent care they have shown to our fur baby, Rose.

I think I may have already written a review before, but I had to write another because I truly cannot say enough about how much I love and appreciate everyone at this veterinarian's office. All of the doctors and staff are consistently very helpful, caring, and comforting. My mom and I recently had to euthanize our senior kitty who had thyroid and kidney disease. It was very sad, but Dr. Heckaman was kind to both my mother and I, as well as the kitty. We were able to pick his ashes up today, and I was impressed at the care and thought that was put into the packaging of our kitty's ashes. I still have another young kitty and I will continue to entrust these doctors and staff for years to come. I cannot recommend this place enough!!!!
