How to Save Money at Howell Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t thank Howell Animal Hospital enough. I took my 11 year old black lab there when his paw was bleeding and they helped me out super quick to get it to stop bleeding. Fast forward a couple of months, I found a mass on my dogs foot. Everyone there took great care of him. We ended up having to lay him to rest, but they made us feel super comfortable. They didn’t try to take advantage of the situation either when it came to pricing. I can’t thank them enough, through the tough time.

I would give negative stars if I could. Let’s start with the fact I bring my two sick dogs in and the Dr says to me she’s sure my dog at home has just as bad teeth.. very condescending. (She doesn’t, she’s a lab) blood work was taken and they said everything looked good. Fast forward a few weeks and my one dog gets a urinalysis and she has severe diabetes. How was that missed in blood work??? I’m unable to get blood samples so I make an appointment to have a glucose curve done. They tell me they’ll have her all day and bring the insulin. I brought that and the syringes I had been using. They call me 4 hours in saying the syringes I brought were too small for my fat dog and they can’t continue. Mind you I wasn’t even told to bring syringes. If they were too small, why not use a needle you know would suit her better? When the dr calls me she says I can bring her in another time.. I already missed work in the morning to drop her off and now they want to do it all again? The response to me was “I’m sorry you’re aggravated “. I go to pick up my dog and I tell them I’m not paying because absolutely nothing was done by them and the old lady at the front says she will NOT release my dog to me. Absolutely crazy. Words were exchanged because no way in hell will MY dog NOT be released to me because I refuse to pay for something these incompetent people couldn’t do. RUN FAR FROM THIS PLACE AND CONDESCENDING VETS.

I cannot thank the staff enough! We were treated with phenomenal respect and compassion on a very, very tough day. The patience and time that was spent with us while we faced a difficult decision meant more than words can express.

I want to preface this by saying this is one of the most expensive vets in the area. Yet, I drive an hour to have my dog seen. Upon coming to see my vet I was greeted by the two old receptionists, usually the ladies at the front desk are nice enough! These ladies were dealing with an older gentleman who didn’t speak english as his first language. His dog needed immediate surgery and they ask him if he has money for that for which he said little money, Then they go on and laugh and ask this man who is on the verge of tears hearing his dog needs surgery if he is a gambler and start cackling together. The man remains silent. That was SO UNPROFESSIONAL! People who go here there animals are their children! Behavior like that from the FRONT DESK face of this business no less is so unacceptable. Secondly my dog went in for shots and I paid 400 no biggie, when I asked for an itemized bill since this dog is in my care and I like to know what is happening the lady looked upset and scuffled around as the place was becoming busy but this is your job? I signed the receipt and my husband asked if we were all good to go and she ignored us and we walked out. We will be finding a vet closer to us to be spending so much money just on shots and being treated like this is unacceptable. The vets and vet techs are all great. The front desk needs to work on their attitude and smiles. Will not be going back and not be recommending! You lost a life long customer!

I was taking my animals to another vet. I felt like I was not getting enough help or information. The first few minutes after Dr. Sverell(sp?) walked into the room, I knew I made the right choice. They squeezed me in as an emergency, but still took all the time needed to help my cat and to make sure I was comfortable with the treatment plan. Felt like a weight was lifted off of my shoulders when we left! The Dr. even gave her samples of the kidney diet food to see which ones she liked. I've never had a vet do that!!!
