How to Save Money at Wholehearted Veterinary Care
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Dr. Malone and the entire veterinary team are so wonderful and I highly recommend them for your fur baby’s care. Our golden retriever, Goose, was terrified of going to the vet and required some extra help. They were so patient, understanding, and compassionate with him. They sat down on the floor to make him more comfortable, always had treats for him, and adapted their strategy to methods that put him at ease. They helped to identify that my 3-year-old Goosey Bear’s behavioral changes were actually symptoms of an aggressive, genetic cancer. I trusted their recommendations and referrals completely. After my sweet boy passed at home, my fiancé called to tell them. He wanted to thank them for all of their care, but was a little emotional at the time and unable to. Without hesitation, Wholehearted called Goose’s oncology team and shared the news for us, sparing us another difficult conversation. Shortly after his passing, we received a card with such kind words from everyone at Wholehearted. It’s on our fridge and I’ll save it forever.

I moved from Chicago and needed to find a vet for my sweet 19 yr old cat. Not only was Wholehearted accepting new patients, they took me in the next day after hearing my concerns. Dr. Malone is honestly the nicest, most calm and knowledgeable veterinarian I have ever come across. Her bedside manner was unparalleled with me and my cat. What always seemed like a stressful place to visit was almost like an oasis in her practice. While my old girl was taken back for her bloodwork, Dr. Malone stayed in the room with me to talk about my cat as if she were her own. It’s unheard of to have such great veterinary care. I wish I could give them more than 5 stars! And can I just rave about these rooms… pending what animal you have, you have a room suited for their needs. A cat jungle gym on the wall! Absolutely amazing!

Our greatest concern in moving to West Michigan was finding excellent veterinarian care. Our previous vet set a high bar and we struggled to find a practice that met our needs. Our number one need was for a practice to LISTEN. From our very first email to Wholehearted we knew we had found a veterinarian practice above the rest here in West Michigan. We have had several appointments, several phone calls, ordered meds via their portal and used their patient portal. We are so pleased with this practice. Highlights: •The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. •The clinic is clean, inviting, and designed to support fear free interactions for your pets. •The patient portal and online pharmacy are easy to use and very convenient. •The technicians had completely read our fur kids files prior to walking in the room and referenced notes previously made (which none of the other clinics we interviewed prior had done) •Both Veterinarians had extensively read our fur kids files, prepared questions for us and reached out to our previous vet for consultation. •Pricing is aligned to other practices and was fair. We understand our fur family is unique. We have 10+ year of rescue/ shelter experience between us, all five of our cats and our dog have complex and often rare medical conditions, and what we spend annually for veterinarian care is typically 30x what the average home would spend. We have a very unique perspective and advocate for quality veterinarian care for EVERYONE. This practice starts by demonstrating that they CARE. We fully endorse this practice and highly encourage others to give them a try. First time pet owner, small creature collectors, complex medical case enthusiasts like ourselves, all will find this practice amazing.

Brought my 2 new boys in for a first visit wellness exam. Being a new snake owner, they helped answer my questions and went over my husbandry for them so I'm more confident in my care. The techs are very knowledgeable and help keep my snakes as comfortable as possible. Even though the exam was slightly stressful for them, they were quick to relax after and back to their usual snake selves. Thank you to all the staff there at Wholehearted Vet!

A fantastic vet clinic. The facility is super clean and very new. The receptionist and vet tech staff are all amazing; they’re really friendly and helpful. And then the vets are really knowledgeable and caring. We feel confident taking our pets here that they’re getting great treatment! They also accept other animals too such as small pets (rabbits) which is not common. Overall I highly recommend them!
