How to Save Money at Animal Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Grand Rapids
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had to bring in my 10 year old pit Bull Sweetie around 1am as she had a bigger seizure with foaming at the mouth. The staff brought her in and started working on her right away when we arrived. She had to stay overnight to get stabilized and be seizure free for 12 hours before being released. Through that time, they sent pictures and opened a text line where you could contact them directly at any time. The Vet explained it was most likely from a brain tumor since she never had seizures before, her age, and her blood work came back normal as well. She reviewed all of our options from there with us and gave her professional opinion on what we should do next. When they released, they went over her medicines and reviewed all steps to take in different scenarios. After 72 hours of her being home, they emailed me asking how she was doing and reminded me that I can call or email at any time if any concerns or questions came up. They were truly awesome during this pretty scary event and were very supportive. They were kind, thoughtful, acted with urgency, and supported us/reassured us through every step. In addition, they were very transparent with all costs. Highly recommend them for your pet’s emergency!!

We had to bring our cat in for a urinary blockage procedure- the staff and veterinarians were all so wonderful! Our cat Banjo had to stay at the vet for 48 hours which was hard for us emotionally, but we were in contact with the vet throughout his stay with pictures and updates about his progress! We could text a number at any time of the day or night and would receive an update quickly. We were allowed to visit him as well, and every time we did we had a great experience. Banjo was truly taken care of so well and we are so thankful.

First time I've ever had to bring my Cooper to an emergency hospital. The staff were kind and caring. Cooper was in rough shape when I brought him in with a case of HGE and had to stay there but they were great about answering my calls for updates as this was the first time in his 5 years of life he had to stay away from us overnight. They were also great about handling his anxiety and fearfulness and accommodating that we needed to wait in a room away from other people. Cooper is such an important part of our family and I'm so thankful to the doctors and staff for saving his life.

Friday afternoon I brought my sweet cat, Buzz, into the emergency vet in Byron Center after a few hours of acting lethargic, and for the first time in his life, refusing food. The Byron Center location was at capacity and I was promptly sent to the Grand Rapids location where Buzz could be seen sooner and Buzz was taken back immediately. Staff members were caring, showed me patience, and above all, provided care to Buzz that ultimately saved his life. Staff was communicative about what they would be doing and did so as quickly as they could so I could have peace of mind. They even provided me a phone charger after my phone died and I wanted to get in communication with family. Buzz had a blockage from consuming non-food items and required emergency surgery. Staff called to update on Buzz’s condition and shared appropriate details and sent the cutest pictures of my little guy as he recovered. It was evident Buzz was receiving a lot of love. Staff was very communicative of the cost and provided options for payment methods (ScratchCard or opening a credit line) as any emergency is never cheap. Buzz is home and resting. I am forever in debt to this establishment for showing me kindness and Buzz even more of it.

I brought my dog in for a potential bowel obstruction. They offered to keep him over night for monitoring or I could monitor from home. I chose to keep him there overnight and I’m thankful I did. They took great care of him and by morning deemed he needed an emergency surgery. They allowed me to come in and visit with him while they prepped the OR. They had him into surgery almost immediately. As this was his second bowel obstruction surgery, the risks were higher. I was a nervous wreck, and Dr. Faith was truly phenomenal. She answered all my questions, kept me calm, and shared her mutual love for pugs- which instantly made me feel better. Her communication was beyond thorough and as immediate as possible (through their texting system). He is recovering amazingly from his surgery I am beyond grateful for my experience here and especially with Dr. Faith!
