How to Save Money at Parkway Small Animal & Exotic Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is best place to go for all your pet’s care. Everyone one is friendly and committed to giving superior service. From the welcoming staff, to techs, to Dr. Knapp, all care about your pet. Dr. Knapp takes the time to explain things thoroughly and make sure all questions are answered. We have been bringing our chameleon here since he had problems at 2 months. We are grateful we got him here and that he is assuredly receiving the best care! I highly recommend Parkway and you will not regret coming here!

I think they’re a bit high cost, but what’s more worrisome is reading the report that says the Vet “recommended euthanasia at this time” when they didn’t clearly say that, and also that my pet had “2 months left” which they also did not verbalize. I realize chart notes are sometimes written hastily, but this kind of stretching the facts is not what I’m accustomed to from the excellent veterinary care I’ve received elsewhere. Yes, I agree with other reviews that the staff is very friendly and helpful.

I have taken my mice here several times, and a fish once, was never displeased, so when I needed a new vet for my cat, I didn’t think twice to bring her here, and I absolutely regret that decision. Dr. Micielli did the exam for my senior cat with anxiety, she met all my concerns with condescension, insinuating many times that I just am an inexperienced cat owner and don’t know the basics, then prescribed a sedative and said they were not able to complete the exam or take labs due to my cat becoming aggressive with them. That is HIGHLY abnormal behavior for her, my cat loves people and never has had issues with any vet in the past, but it was a new vet for her so I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I paid full price for the unfinished exam under the agreement I would bring her back in two weeks on a sedative to complete what they couldn’t finish. Two weeks later and even with a sedative they still couldn’t do a full exam, I asked they at least look at her teeth which was one of my main concerns, that maybe with me in the room she will do better. I am incredibly disgusted by what I witnessed as Dr. Micielli attempted to look at her teeth. She handled her as if she is not a living creature but a doll, manhandling her even when my cat was crying in pain she did not let up. It became immediately obvious to me why they were not able to finish the exam both times, I told her to stop, we will pay for the labs and leave. They wouldn’t refund me for the STILL unfinished exam and instead recommended I take my cat to their sister location that focuses more on cats. Why wasn’t I told to go there in the first place? I feel awful for what I put my cat through, and sick to my stomach to think if that’s how they handled her while I was in the room, what did they do to her when they took her out of the room?

I brought my Thanksgiving Turkey in for a checkup and everyone here was wonderful, patient, sweet and kind. Gave me serious peace of mind. My anxiety was through the roof. I was extremely nervous at first. Especially when anyone holds my Obi. The VA, Marissa, was the sweetest in the way she held him and very gentle. (I was internally panicking because he is a very strong boy with heft. seriously made me so happy. I knew he was in great hands! The Staff here is wonderful and Dr. Periat is EXCELLENT!!! I will be recommending them to anyone with reptile and animal needs! Great work! Great staff. Clean. This is my second review for here. Always need to give credit where credit is due! Thank you parkway and staff! Shared some photos bellowed for all to enjoy! :)
