How to Save Money at Emergency Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hunt and the whole veterinary staff is amazing. We brought our dog in last night for an emergency infection that progressed very quickly. We ended up having to euthanize our poor baby, but the staff (especially Dr. Hunt) was so incredibly kind and compassionate throughout the whole process. They were reassuring that we were making the right decision for our fur baby. I will be forever grateful for the knowledge and outstanding bedside manner during such a difficult time. This is hands-down the best emergency clinic I have ever been to. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for everything you did for Roxy and for my daughter and myself. ❤️

We’ve brought our dogs and kitten here over the years but our recent kitten experience inspired me to write a review. A week after finding a stray kitten, he ceased all eating and drinking. We took him to our usual vet and then brought him home for medication and syringe feeding. Despite our efforts, he continued to decline and our primary vet said it was time for hospitalization and IVs. Our kitten was at death’s door when we brought him in. Our vet called ahead of time and the team here was ready to take him. Within an hour, intake and history was complete and they had him ready for care. They were very transparent about cost and sympathetic both to the unexpected emotional and financial toll—which I was appreciative of. We received a call the next morning at 7 AM by the vet who seemed genuinely happy that our little guy had made a complete 180 and was doing much better. They advised us to leave him there the rest of the day but also gave the option to take him home. We decided to play it safe and received an additional call at 5 PM with updates and that he was ready for discharge. We now have a healthy, happy, playful kitten that you would never guess just 24 hours ago he was close to dying. I’m very grateful for the team here and everything they have done over the years for our pets. I’ve witnessed some very heart wrenching cases in their waiting room. It’s important to remember this isn’t your usual clinic and the staff is often incredibly busy and facing some of the worst case scenarios we can have for our pets. We have to give them grace and despite the times where it felt staff was having a hard day, I still had the impression they genuinely cared about my pet’s well-being.

EVH has always taken wonderful care of my pets, from my pet rats in college to my kitty with a urinary blockage this year. We are so lucky to have a 24hr veterinary emergency in our area, and they definitely do not get enough appreciation! I really enjoyed getting photo updates, being able to text them for updates and questions, and their online scheduling is so easy and user friendly. Highly recommend for any pets!

I write this review more frustrated with myself than anything. I feel like I allowed myself to be taken advantage of because of my growing concern over my dog's limp and swollen paws. I already knew it was possibly inflammation when I brought her in. After waiting, 4-5 hours for an update, they vets didn't tell me anything new. They THINK it might be inflammation, but they're weren't sure. When I picked her up, another 4 hours later, they gave me some pain relievers to give her at home because they couldn't be bothered to give it to her there and sent me on my way after charging me $508. I learned NOTHING after paying thar amount, not the cause or any way to prevent it. I wiped her paws with the $77 wipes they made me purchase and gave her the pain relieving medicine every 12 hours as instructed. Days later, there has been no improvement, in fact her paw has gotten worse and is even more swollen than it was before I used all the medication they suggested. I am hurt because I was desperate to help my girl who was in pain and they did nothing for her. They got what they wanted out of me and she is still in pain. If I go back, all they would do is charge me another $500 and she would still be suffering.

I took my guinea pig there and had to drive over an hour. His own vet wouldn’t see him and told me I needed to take him to this hospital. I am so grateful for all of them. They got him back right away and kept me updated within minutes! Everyone was so compassionate, kind and patient with me. They were honest with their recommendations and unfortunately we decided to put him down. Thank you all so much. Your kindness really helps in these extremely tough situations. I will forever be grateful and recommend this hospital!
