How to Save Money at South Portland Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After reading the many positive reviews, I made an appt. with this practice. My experience has been so negative that I wonder about all the positive reviews! A vet saw me and my dog for the first visit, and from there on in, a tech took care of us - she told me that the techs even do the cleaning of a dog's teeth. I knew that I would have to find a new vet when my dog had a very serious ear infection with a lot of "gunk" in the ear. When I took my dog in, they took him in the back and then delivered him back to me with an antibiotic and a steroid to take - and they never even cleaned out his ear!! The ear got worse several weeks ago, and I took my dog to the emergency vet in Scar- borough. A vet came out and talked to me ahead of seeing my dog, and then he came out and talked to me after. They cleaned the ear out, and then called me several days later to check on him. I am sorry to say that I would never refer anyone to S. Portland Veterinary Hospital, and I consider myself and my dog lucky that no lasting damage was done from what I consider to be serious maltreatment.

I cannot write enough good things about our Vet Hospital. They are extremely busy, and sometimes cannot get to the phone right away, but when they do I'm always greeted with kindness. Their Tech have talked to me over the phone countless times about symptoms and are always happy to have me bring the cats in to be seen, even that day. They answer all my silly questions and point me in the right direction. There's never any pressure or judgement. Dr. Allen said we have the most handsome cat in South Portland. Although he probably says that often, it just shows how much they care. My cat Raven even busted out of her carrier once and they had to use medical tape to repair it. Our other cat Gally often throws up, is on a prescription diet and was the runt of the litter so we keep an eye on him and South Portland Vet Hospital on speed dial. In my experience they have responsible pricing and I believe they even have a payment plan. Call today and chat to them, you wont regret it.

Nice place! We are from out of town and needed a prescription. No other vet would help us out. This place did not have an issue with it. Highly recommended.

Very competent, helpful and empathetic. Prices were certainly reasonable. I am very pleased with my pets’ new veterinary friends and staff.

I was referred to this hospital from a previous client many many years ago and she was picky! Can I just say the doctors are wonderful and so isn't the staff. They are always so nice and take the time to answer questions. They are reasonably priced and they have an easy location. Today the doctor talked to me and my daughter whom I had on speakerphone for 45 minutes! He is very caring and I agreed with everything that he said. He could've just brushed us off especially since our dog is very healthy and looks great, but he really listened to our concerns (mainly my daughter's) and he made her feel much more at ease with her dog. The dog has anxiety and has for years. I really just cannot say enough about what a wonderful visit we had today. And it bares repeating...he really listened and talk with us for 45 minutes!!! The staff (many times I see Amanda) they are just great. I don't think you can have a bad experience there. They are wonderful and caring people! We love our dogs and to have a vet that cares is quite can I say...priceless?! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
