How to Save Money at Windsor Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m never disappointed in Dr. Wiles care. He does fantastic work, is very knowledgeable and easy to get along with, some of my horses are very high spirted/spooky and he has always been very calm and professional when handling them. I have used his services for vaccines, dental work, and gelding surgery. Highly recommend!

We are hobbies chicken farmers that care for our flock like pets. Dr. Wiles has been instrumental in maintaining the health of our chickens. He has saved the life of many of our birds, and has proven to be the single most knowledgeable chicken vet we have found, by far. Anyone with chickens in this area knows there is no vet that really knows how to treat chickens. While we certainly have had to do a lot or research and learning, particularly before we found out about Windsor Vet, Dr. Wiles has been exceptional in helping us along the path of responsible chicken farming. From vaccinations, and medications to diagnosis, and other treatments he and his team (Cheryl and Ryan) are absolutely priceless in providing knowledge, training and care to us and our flock. We have also bought several chicks from Windsor vet all of which grew into beautiful and friendly additions to our flock, they are some of our cutest friendliest healthiest chickens. Using any other vet to care for your flock is a waste of time and money unless your seeking perhaps a surgery or similar which can't really be done on chickens anyway. These are good people doing a good job. Period. They answer calls, do the research, provide help willingly. Just really smart really great folks!

Dr Wiles has been my vet for around 25 years. I have had a bunch of different animals over the course of my life, so have had interactions with several different veterinarians, and Dr Wiles is by far the best. The expertise and compassion he has for the animals he treats is above and beyond. He has always taken the time to explain what is going on with each case he has treated. He truly cares for the animals he treats and their owners. There has never been a time he has not made himself available to answer the millions of questions I've had over the years. If you're looking for a veterinarian that will work with you on the best care for your pets, Dr. Wiles is the veterinarian you're looking for.

Dr. Wiles is a great vet. His farm call prices are reasonable with the prices of gas and vehicle maintenance, and his prices for general health maintenance are also very reasonable. He is compassionate and will help you understand what is going on with your horse! Great with equine dentistry (one of the few vets that does it), and really enjoys his work. His 24-hour emergency services are also helpful, and he promptly returns calls. Always willing to give estimates for potential procedures. I've never regretted switching to him.

I wish I could give this practice zero stars. Dr. Wiles was called out for an emergency on a horse we had out for training, and we are severely disappointed by the horrible work that was done. To top it all off, we were utterly surprised at how expensive the bill was for services rendered. Have no fear, it’s not due to lack of experience with vets... we’ve been doing this for 40+ years and are no strangers to significant vet bills!). Finally, it is worth mentioning that our own vet came to look at the leg a few days later and was unimpressed. Long story short, use other vets for your horse.
