How to Save Money at Meridian Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Lipton & her kind, capable team have been a real blessing. My dog was diagnosed with Addison's Disease earlier this year, & I nearly lost her. Dr. Lipton has gone above & beyond, doing diligent research, communicating with other specialists in the area, & have kept me in the loop about a treatment plan, all while keeping the astronomical cost of treatments under control. I am deeply grateful & would recommend Meridian to anyone looking for top-tier veterinary services.

Just had our first appointment with Dr. Lipton for a holistic oncology consult for our pup. Dr. Lipton and her team took the time and care to review Milo's medical records, complete a full exam, provide intel on dietary changes/supplements AND...do some reiki, body work and non-needle accupuncture all on a very anxious, grouchy, cantankerous old pup. We are glad to have found this practice and feel we are on the right path in helping Milo with his quality of life.

Terrible front desk reps, Eddie has a poor attitude, communication and customer relation skills. Failed to reveal curbside policy prior to appointment, cannot be in the same room with pet. Pay with cash only, they will make unauthorized charges to credit card. Little to no parking. Go to the Banfield clinic at Calverton. Lovely people to work with, the front desk is great, easy to schedule an appointment, great deal on vaccines and unlimited visits for the first year. You can also be in the same room with pets and Doc.

After setting up appointment for our dogs to be vaccinated, explaining that our dogs were in needed of the canine influenza vaccine for boarding for an upcoming trip, being assured that the canine influenza vaccine was available and in-stock at their office, and paying the required $100 deposit to secure our appointments. The week before our appointment we received an email saying that they could no longer provide the vaccines due to short supply. A call to office was met with nonchalant indifference and a complete lack of compassion. This left us scrambling to find other solutions. I'm fully aware of the shortage of the canine vaccine in the area and I'm sure this office was as well. If they were honest with us when we first booked the appointment we could have used that time to make other arrangements. This was a completely disrespectful waste of our time.

Hands down some the best veterinary care I have received over the decades of pet ownership. Dr. Lipton is exceptional. She has this unique combination of clinical knowledge/training that she applies to treatment plans. She uses both holistic modalities and conventional care and spends time thinking through the health problems. She stays on top of the latest research. She goes the extra mile and has consulted with other professionals (specialists) to ensure the best care options when it falls outside of her expertise. She treats my pets with the love, dedication and attention to detail as if these pets were her own. This practice and Dr. Lipton are amazing and I feel grateful that I have them in my corner caring for my cat and dog.
