How to Save Money at Severn Square Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I could give them 10 stars I would. My experience here today November 22, 2024 makes me question every NEGATIVE review left about this practice. I am 54 years old. My cat is 18 years 8 months old and my last cat made it to 20 years 9 months. I am very diligent about my pet’s healthcare and I know a bad Vet when I see one. You can’t tell me this man Dr. Holden doesn’t LOVE animals and doesn’t LOVE his job. We just moved to this area in July 2024. Today was our first experience and he made my wife and I feel like we were his favorite clients. We had a warm welcome when we came in. Our cat’s appointment started on time (not that it really makes a difference for me because I understand things happen.). Dr. Holden was very patient, friendly and thorough with his exam. He explained in detail and PLAIN ENGLISH of what he was doing and what he was looking for. He made us feel good and confident about his abilities. That means the world to us. You know in your heart when you come across a health care professional that takes their job seriously. He takes his job and responsibilities seriously. If you’re looking for glitz, glamour, LED Lighting, 90 inch screen TV’s with surround sound then this practice is not for you. If you want a dedicated health care professional with decades of experience to tend to your loved one then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this practice.

This place is... extremely disorganized, and that's the absolute nicest way I can put it. This doctor is attempting to operate under dual criteria - as both a primary vet and an emergency vet - but he doesn't have the staff or internal infrastructure for it. He and one technician were the only staff members in a building with four animals in it, two of whom had come in as emergency cases. My dogs and I got shuffled around from room to room to room, at one point sitting on the floor of what I think was the laboratory, while the technician tried clumsily to triage and figure out where we were meant to go. I didn't even get to finish filling out my dogs' intake form when the doctor was yelling at me (in front of two anxious dogs, no less) not to put their leashes down. When I asked if he or his assistant could take dictation for me, because I only have two hands, neither would help. The lack of professionalism combined with the even more egregious lack of courtesy genuinely made for the worst experience I have ever had in an animal clinic. And I am counting the time I had to take one of my dogs to urgent care for an impacted colon. Suffice it to say, I ended up walking out. Doctor, I know money is the law of the land, but please don't bite off more than you can chew. You are doing a disservice to the animals, who deserve your undivided attention. Their humans are trusting you to keep them alive. Because of your lack of professionalism, my dogs' medical treatment will be delayed as I search for a more competent provider. I'm lucky my dogs are not in crisis; but who's to say the next dog won't be? What critical thing will you miss while you're juggling too many caseloads for two people? To anyone who is new to this area: I recommend avoiding this practice. A coworker referred me here, and I can see from the reviews it must have been stellar, once upon a time. I think that time has passed.

My two puppies, Lime and Lulu, always visit Dr. Holden. All staff adore our babies and take a good care of them. Dr. Holden is very professional and took a very good care of them. Our dogs got neutered and fixed by Dr. Holden and recovered very well. They love visiting the vet and always get yummy treats. Lime and Lulu will always go to Severn Square Vet. :)

I have been bringing my two dogs here since they were babies ! Love their staff . They’re so sweet to the dogs and very kind to me as well. Ignore the other reviews . Everyone has an off day so it’s normal not to be 100% all the time. I will continue to bring my pets because I see how wonderful they are treated every time .

Dr. Holden and his staff are incredibly professional and patient. They take the time to get to know your animals personality. Dr. Holden is very knowledgeable and caring. I recently had to put my 16 year old Golden Retriever down. It was an extremely hard decision to make but Dr. Holden and his staff were caring and sympathetic. The day we brought her in for the last time, they placed a comfortable blanket on the table for her and allowed us all the time we needed to say goodbye. I've been a customer there for over 10 years and will continue to recommend him.
