How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff there is universally kind and helpful. I've used them for several problematic rescue dogs and they have done their best to handle and comfort the animal. Here is Clover a painfully shy lab mix and now a regular patient at Banfield.

We’ve used Banfield for 8 years now and for 3 different pets. We love the staff, but it seems Banfield is taking on too many pets to care for their current pets. My dog is suffering from an illness that needs to be addressed and it will be 3 business days until we can get her seen and it’s for a “drop off” appointment — that doesn’t work well with our dog with anxiety. I had to call consistently for 8 minutes to get a receptionist to pick up - no offer to leave a message, just 0 for call again (these receptionist are amazing and I can tell are working their hardest with the loaded schedules and demands). We used to have no problem having our calls answered and being seen same day for these issues that we are paying monthly for. It’s really upsetting and I can imagine the staff feels overwhelmed, too. :( Just a consideration to help service your current customers.

Staff was super friendly and treated my senior cat like a queen. She had matted fur and had to be sedated to get groomed. Vet did a great job and my cat moves much more freely than before.

One thing I can say when they diagnosed my puppy with parvo The test was on the house and we were sent away to try to collect enough money to get treatment for my seven month old puppy. I just had a newborn baby days before this happened. I didn’t have an extra thousand plus dollars I didn’t have it. I had tried to borrow money every which way I could this dog was not a pet. This dog was my baby just like one of my kids. I was under the impression when I bought this dog that she had already had her first set of shots, which would have included the parvo vaccine however, I was misinformed. I took her to Banfield Friday. She was gone Sunday night. I did everything I could to try to save her including IVs to keep her hydrated. I went to tractor supply I got a vaccine. Maybe it would knock the sickness out of her but nobody cares about your animal or your pet, if you don’t have money, they don’t care you would think that there was one animal lover in any of these hospitals for animals, but there is not one among the lot that give a shit about your pet unless you have money so I would give less than one star if I could, and still review anybody reading this make sure you get some type of insurance for your pet in case the worst happens to you because no one at any of these vets animal hospitals will help you unless you have an Extra thousand plus just sitting around waiting to get spent

The staff were so nice and I was able to get a weekend appointment. Prices were very reasonable and you can find lots of information on their website. The location is good (right in front of the Salisbury Mall) and has plenty of parking.
