How to Save Money at Potomac Animal Hospital Inc
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been bringing our pets here for over 40 years. Dr. Jason is especially caring and knowledgeable. This last visit, he was able to determine why my dog was coughing. And fortunately, there was a remedy.

I've been bringing my two (now three) Rhodesian Ridgebacks here for several years. Our first visit was pretty dramatic - one of my pups went headfirst through a sliding glass door, and we came into the waiting room near closing time with a large bloody dog with a lot of lacerations. Dr. Jason Scott provided excellent care for our pup, and has been our go to vet for the past 5+ years for all three of our dogs (as well as the many Ridgebacks I foster). His advice is solid, pragmatic, and compassionate. Highly recommended.

I moved here four years ago and my elderly dog has received the best care since we arrived. My sister recommended and we are so happy! The staff is and very welcoming, kind and knowledgeable . Dr. Jason Scott and Dr. Harris are very caring and take the time to explain what is going on and their advice is never about pushing medications or procedures. I completely trust this practice and appreciate all of the care my dog has received! The groomers are also the best in this area! Ken knows exactly how to groom Teddy!

Updated with photos. My dog had metals in her teeth from chewing on her cage while boarded at Potomac Animal Hospital. She was neglected. She had to get 3 teeth removed so she will no longer be in pain. I obtained their daily log where they have an entry for my dog on day one and her teeth were not broken pre boarding. Also, there is no mention of an abrasion on her nose. They never called to address this problem nor did they try to correct it for a whole week. They never called about my cats not eating. I have phone logs proving it. My dog Frosty got an eye infection the very next day of boarding. They did call me for that pet. I boarded my two healthy dogs and two cats for a week. My German shepherd came back with her nose completely scratched and bloody and she has now two broken teeth. My cat Moxie weight has gone down. we called and shared photos to show them that it did happen on their watch and they refused to acknowledge it. I use the vet services too and according to the vet at Potomac Animal Hospital, my dog has good teeth and is healthy. So what is it? Also they lied about my cat Moxie. They said that they called us repeatedly to let us know that she was not eating when in fact, they didn't. My call log doesn’t show the calls. No apologizing was offered. Do not board your pets there If you care about them.

The veterinarian and staff at this practice seem to be lacking in people skills at times. They seem like the teacher in middle school who flipped when you started a quiz before they said you were allowed to, or would give you bonus points "for reading the instructions" in some weird power move. For routine care, sure, drop your pet off, get a shot, pay the bill - it's really hard to mess these up. For anything requiring more than a cursory glance or nuance , I highly recommend going elsewhere. Lately I have avoided any "does it all" practice that claims to do grooming, boarding, and medicine, and I suggest you do, too. Maybe these fellas can focus on getting the medicine part down and maybe medical boarding. Edit: I am concerned by how many people report medical emergencies occurring or serious adverse test results without being notified by the veterinarian.
