How to Save Money at Millersville Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Millersville Animal Hospital is family to us! Our dogs are treated with care and love. We adore Dr.Rubin and all the millersville staff! Everyone is friendly , knowledgeable, and genuine. We have recently started boarding our dogs at Countryside Kennels in Owings and Millersville Animal Hospital sent over all their records on the same day I called. Making it so much easier for us. Best Vet in Maryland! We highly recommend!

Everyone is very nice. They do the exams with you in the room which is much better than a lot of other places that just take the animals into the back without the owner. The vet spent a good deal of time with us and it felt they truly cared and listened to our concerns and provided us with multiple treatment options. Highly recommend!

This is the third vet clinic I’ve taken my nervous pup to. I sensed Dr. Rommel’s warm energy right away while my pup shook uncontrollably because he’s so scared of the vet. Dr. Rommel was patient and understanding as he knelt down and met my pup at his level. By the end of the visit, my pup was cautiously sniffing around the room and no longer shaking. Additionally, he is the first doctor who inquired about the need for Bordetella vaccine and turns out my antisocial dog who is rarely around other dogs doesn’t really need it. Similarly, the previous vet was eager to charge me over $2K for dental procedure whereas Dr. Rommel was clear that my pup was gathering tartar so we need to keep an eye on it and to keep brushing his teeth but it’s not necessary to put him through the dental work just yet. I value the integrity, authenticity, and kindness from today’s visit. I feel so relieved to have finally found a vet my pup and I can rely on. Third time really must be a charm…thank you Dr. Rommel!

Dr. Rubin, Rhiannon, Desarae, Kim and all the wonderful staff I haven’t met behind closed doors. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. I moved here from Southern VA and couldn’t be more happy to have found a reliable Animal Hospital. One of my pups was 15 years and 7 months, her name was Mia and unfortunately I had to make a really hard decision to send her to heaven. But we partied hard on Monday and Tuesday till her time came (filled with McDonalds chicken nuggets, vanilla milkshake, balloons, a trip to the park on both days, our last walk in our neighborhood, we said our final goodbyes to our neighbors and to the staff at petsmart, trip to Lowe’s and our last time sleeping together but most importantly we watched “ All Dogs Go to Heaven” as a pack on the bed before going in that afternoon, Dr. Rubin and Rhiannon were so kind and patient with me during the entire process. I even stayed a hour after and brought in Daisy to say her final goodbyes to her mommy, we stayed for the entire process. The loss was hard but I know it can’t be easy for you as Veterinarians and Vet Techs to actually physically do it. I thank you for your bravery for that. She is breathing and running around like a young pup again over the Rainbow Bridge. Mia August 16,2005-February 16,2021 I did a Private Cremation and Mia was home 2 weeks later, so happy. Then I brought my other dog Daisy here to get Spayed/ Tumor removal and the process was just as smooth. Desarae met Daisy at the door so she could get her x rays and shots for her first visit. Desarae is always smiling. Dr. Rubin who is always so respectful and informative then sent me to Victoria I believe to schedule Daisy and it was just as smooth and friendly process. Daisy came back for her spay and Kim dealt with greeting me. She was kind and assuring. The communication was phenomenal. Dr. Rubin did awesome. Dropped off early and picked up later in the evening. Smooth and easy. Now my entire pack is spayed and neutered! I have a pack of 5 and now I can rest easy here in Maryland knowing I have a Animal hospital with reliable staff to keep my pups healthy. I appreciate it. Thank you!

Our first visit was rather urgent, our boy Stormy had a claw puncture his toe pad. They got us in same day. Inside was spotlessly clean. Staff was friendly, vet and vet tech were great with Stormy and me. Problem solved. Pricing is reasonable. We'll be back for annual check ups for all three of our purrbabies. Highly recommend!!
