How to Save Money at Gaithersburg Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The best in the area! The waiting area is big,, neat and very relaxing. Excellent service ! The doctor took the time to examine our pet, she clearly explained the situation and the pros and cons. They are very transparent about their service and fees.

I recently had a deeply frustrating experience at a veterinary facility where I went for an X-ray for my dog. My orthopedic specialist is based in Miami, where surgery costs are 50% less than in Washington, DC. However, I needed the X-ray to send to my orthopedic. The facility initially quoted me $256 for the X-ray, but upon arrival, the price jumped to over $500 due to additional charges for medications, care, and other services that were not included in the initial estimate. I explained that we had already spent over a thousand dollars on surgery and care, and it was shocking to see that the additional options were not disclosed upfront. Although I understand the need for these services, what I cannot accept is that after spending so much money, they suggested that if I didn’t put my dog under anesthesia, she would experience significant pain. They were fully prepared to proceed without anesthesia simply because I couldn’t afford it. This experience made it clear to me that for this facility, it’s all about money, not the well-being of the animals. They were willing to let my dog suffer because I couldn’t pay the $520, and they even charged me $60 just for leaving my dog at the facility in the morning, under the pretense of “special care.” These fees kept frustrated me. When a dog is in a cage. He is in a cage. I mean…. Seriously … In stark contrast, when I drove to Miami, the veterinarian there didn’t charge me a single dollar to examine my dog, do the xray and did not even need to put under anesthesia and gave the dog back after 10 min. because the doctor genuinely wanted to help and found unnecessary to put the dog under anesthesia …. It’s from VOCATION !!! Not business. The difference between a professional who cares about animals and those who are only in it for the money is stark and alarming. I strongly advise anyone considering to check what the cost are really are. If you want to negotiate. You cannot. They don’t accomoditate anything . They even ready to let the dog suffer without anesthesia if you cannot afford. No accomoditation at all. Finally, the dog did not need anestesia or stay over or anything like this. Just an XRAY. XRAY. That’s it !

Gaithersburg Animal Hospital has provided the best possible professional and compassionate care for a rescue dog and 3 cats over the past 20 years. Cleo, my rescued cat, who I have an extremely strong bond with is now 17. The few times she has needed health care the Veterinarians at Gaithersburg Animal Hospital have provided me with the best advice to ensure she remains healthy and can continue to enjoy her senior years. The cost for her care has been extremely affordable. Thank you to Dr. Dan and Dr. Debbie!

We have been long-time clients of Gaithersburg Animal Hospital, for about 20 years. We really appreciate all the veterinarians for their service to care for our pets through thick and thin. We will miss you all very much as we make our move out-of-state.

Miles was most recently boarded at the Gaithersburg Animal Hospital for four days. While he does not like to be boarded nor does he like to go to the Vet, he is always treated with care and love by the Doctors and their Staff. When he comes home from boarding he is not nervous, anxious, no loose stools or loss of appetite. He is happy to see me but I know that he has been well cared for during his stay.
